You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
In the garage and rummaging through my old kit and I have fitted a stainless steel Surley 32 tooth chainring, a Surley Singulator and a 18 tooth cog. I have used an old A2Z set of spacers and the chain line is spot on. I think all stuff is 8/32?
But....
It all runs perfect in the stand, but when I ride it, clunk, skip, clunk. It’s too dark to really see what is going on, but iis he real issue solved by getting a 3-7 speed chain, as the Surley manual says so? Yes, there was a RTFM moment after an hour of faffing.
The clunk, skip is just noisy, it actually runs, just unnervingly.
Surly cogs will work with 9 speed chains. It's what I've been using for 8 years. 10 speed fits, but the chain doesn't pack right down on to the cog. The internal width is just slightly too narrow.
It's just a matter of time before you have stem / wedding vegetables interface.
Been married 16 years, veg come out for Birthdays , be fine then.
Don't go out the week before your birthday and you'll probably fine.

Do you reckon? One of the crappest chains ever, IME
KMC Z610 HX on the other hand.......
KMC all day, everyday.
My last SRAM chain lasted less than 1/2 a mile. #StretchStretchSnap
Clearly I'm crap judge of chains.
Never gave me any issues hauling my not insignificant frame up hills on my old SS.
Admit I generally use KMC on the rest of my bikes.
Also if the sprockets are 3/32 I found the 1/8th chains have enough wriggle room so they can drop. Never had any trouble with a 3-8 speed chain with the same chain line in my experience.

What sort of lame excuse is that? đŸ˜‰
A 10 speed chain should be 3/32 so should be fine. Are all the components new or are some more worn than others?
A worn chain won't work as well on brand new cogs/chainring and variations of that.
As for chains, I have used Wipperman 808 for many years and found them very good..
