What front and rear chainring setup do people use on a mtb which will be used for off road
32:16 on a 26er
33:19 on my 29+
*edit*
Is this what you meant? Just reread your post and it's a bit ambiguous.
Setup is a single ring on any old crankset, and a wide based sprocket with spacers on a normal rear hub.
32/16 seems to be the default ratio on a 26" wheel and it's what I use. Seems a ridiculous ratio on road but when you hit the rougher stuff it makes perfect sense and feels right. Stronger legged riders can up the gear a bit and grind the hills a bit more.
Classic 32/16 on a 29+ rigid bike. A lot will depend on where you ride though for obvious reasons.
I like a bit more chain wrap - 20t on rear - 35t front (29er)
32:16 then 32:14 for a challenge. I'm on 36:16 which hurts.
32-18 on my 29er, just use a deore crankset from the parts bin with a singlespeed chainring on it. Most important part is the wide based sprocket on the back, stops the sprocket eating the free hub.
Thanks for the advice I've decided to go 32 16 I'll let you know tomorrow how it went .
