Hi. just recently bought a vitus vee 1 singlespeed from chain reaction cycles. From day one I have noticed a strange knocking, clunking noise coming from the bike when pedaling, which i think is increasingly getting worse. its not coming from the bottom bracket, but two things that i have noticed is that the chain has different tension in places and also there is slight play in the rear cog (is this normal). do you think one of these is the reason for this? appreciate the advise/help guys

Could be, in its tightest spot it still needs about 1cm of vertical movement, the cog should have zero play in it, tighten the lockring.

a little play isn't unusual.

tough to diagnose a clunk.

but say i get 1cm vertical movement at one part of the chain, rotate the cranks, then find that this part of the chain has 2cm movement, is this normal?

If it's not coming from the BB where is it coming from - not being rude but on my fixed commuter the last two lots of clunking have been the sealed BB failing

Is it a shimano freewheel ? if it is they can make a knocking noise not allways in time to the pedal stroke.

so theres no way the knocking sound can come from the chain? just that my no it all old man is adament its a faulty chain 🙄 ill give the bb a good strip/regrease tommorow hopefully that is the problem

'Knocks' tend to be more bb based as the frame amplifies the sound more. A click or tick or anything gritty sounding would more likely be freewheel. Hard to tell with actually hearing it. I take there is no noise when free wheeling?
