Macho grinder gear or woosey spin like a spinny thing set up?

By Macho I mean big hills and 32:14 or 32:16 at a push. On 26" wheels.

This is always an odd question, as it depends so much on the rider.

I found there wasn't much 32:16 wouldn't go up, and if you can't you may aswell walk anyhow.

IMO SS being bad up hills is a myth. The real pain in the arse is spinning out on the flat/downhill.

36:18 for surrey hills for me. Find it about perfect for nightriding pace on the downhill trails too.

i had 36:18, 2:1 which was (and is) perfect for most stuff and ideal for glentress etc, but i recently put heavier tyres on [s]and got less fit[/s] and was struggling a bit on some hills in the pentlands, so went for 36:20 the other night. definitely better, though it's going to be an arse changing chain length depending where i'm going - not sure i can arrange it to just shift in the dropouts..

is a 69er, so 26 at the back

but anyway, unless it's technical or crazy steep i would always prefer to get it over with as quick as possible and the 2:1 gearing seems about right

32:14 (or maybe 32:12, can't remember which) on my SS at the moment. Steeper hills are hard work!

I tried 32:16 up a Welsh mountain to see how it would go - it was bloody hard work! Had to stop every 10 mins for a breather 😳

Did Nant yr Arian in 28:17 in the Summer & reckon I'd go for 28:15 the next time. Maybe things would be different if I didn't live in the flatlands?

32:16 here too, main riding is on the Malverns and can clear most things, and those I can't why would you want to? 😕

Have done Afan and Cwm Carn on it no problem - it's one of those little battles in life that are fun TBH.

34:19 on a 29er, more to do with chainlength tbh on my frame

IMO SS being bad up hills is a myth. The real pain in the arse is spinning out on the flat/downhill.

Completely agree with this, applies to road and mtb
