You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Right, I need some new wheels for my tricross single, but not sure where to look.
They need to take my screw on WI freewheel, and be not too heavy.
And they need to work with v-brakes! Ordered some on-one wheels, but the braking surface is too narrow, so they'll need to go back (hassles).
I can build my own wheels, so suggestions of hub/spoke/rim combos also welcome, if they work out a reasonable price. It's just a commuter, so don't really want to spend big money though, and pre-built would be nice, as I need the bike to commute on!
MTB wheels I'd be fine, but 700cc off road singlespeed stuff is a bit of an unknown for me!
Or if anyone knows a rim with the same diameter as an alex ace 19 (the current worn out rims) or close enough, let me know cos I could just lace one of them on the current wheel. New hubs would be nice too mind.
No one else has any ideas either then? 🙁
go to your local bike shop and ask them. if it was me i wouldn't be looking at a screw on hub. i would convert a 9 speed hub as i feel they are easier to service.
I dunno about easier to service - the WI freewheel is nice in use, easy to service and I can get all the spare parts. And a hub without a freewheel in it is mechanically incredibly simple, and the wheel can be built without dish. Also I need 120mm spacing, so it's pretty much gotta be a track hub.
right ok. go for a goldtech hub Link
on a mivic open pro rim or for a even stronger rim how about TK 540 Link
A719 rims (here), Surly Hubs (here), DTSwiss 2.0/1.8 spokes (your LBS (probably)).
DTSwiss online spoke calculator here: I can't remember what I used (other than them all being ~290mm ish).
That'd be (err, that *is*) my choice for a standard 700C/29er SS wheel build (albeit with a 135mm hub) but they might not be for everyone tho'. Not the lightest wheels ever, but tough and reliable.
I've got a spare ss crossbike wheel in the garage that's had very little use if you're interested?
Drop us an email and i'll go and dig it out.
Goldtech hub seconded
bought one for my Singlecross, er, over 4 years ago, laced it to an Open Pro rim, sold the Singlecross for a nicer SSCX, replaced the axle to fit the new 130mm rear end, bearings still as good as new
Blimey - you're alive Jo!
Salsa delgardo cross rims on White ind hubs.
Go polished throughout.
Charlie - was going to recommend your services when up you popped. BTW where is your shop? Is it in Swanage?
Would have called in to say Hi and have a look round.
Ahah, some good suggestions now, thanks all!
Forgot to check CTBM's shop to see what he sells, had good service there before so it'd be a favourable option.
I'll look into the above suggestions (though some are sounding somewhat pimping...but it's always hard to resist nice wheels).
2nd the Goldtec. Or a nice Phil Wood track hub laced to an Open Pro, which is what I did. In fact 2 days ago I'd have offered you mine but a shonky old track frame has appeared in the garage ;o)
Hang on, are goldtec hubs just fixed-thread? I need* a 1.37 x 24 tpi freewheel thread for my WI freewheel.
*I'm not riding fixed off-road!
I'd recommend staying away from White Industry hubs, unless you want to change the bearings almost immediately. I got perhaps 300 miles of dry riding in on mine before the bearings were shot. Thankfully Kael/Katec sorted me out with another set so all was well.
As you said - it's a commuter bike. Go fixed and quit whinging!
Yeah but I do ride it offroad occasionally too! (and a bit everyday to work)
Plenty of room on a fixed thread for a freewheel.
I got 7 years out of some White ind bearings. Sounds like the cartridge bearings were duff. But that would be a no brainer warranty thing.
Yep in Swanage, dorsets answer to Honolulu.
I just laced an Open Pro onto my old hubs on my SS Tricross. I use 38mm tyres and all is fine. When you look at how small an mtb rim is in proportion to the tyre you realise that a few mm on your cross bike isn't an issue.
My tricross is getting on a bit and the hubs have seen better days (axle and nuts particularly), but I might re-use them. It's just by the time the spokes and rims are being replaced may aswell think about hubs too (think the ERD of an open pro is enough different I can't just re-use spokes).
I'm not bothered about tyre width issues, it was the size of the breaking surface that's the issue on the ones I ordered.
Plenty of room on a fixed thread for a freewheel.
This has been confusing me. Some hubs/wheels are sold as Fixed/fixed or fixed/free - what's the difference then? E.g.
http://www.ukbikestore.co.uk/product/66/whhaat/halo-aerorage-track-wheel.html
Is the thread not different then? Or the lockring/thread?
Ahh wait, might have it sussed out. Fixed side is stepped for a freewheel, freewheel means no step? And so I can still put my freewheel on a fixed hub, just not (quite) as securely? But that's fine, cos it's as many threads as a fixed cog would have anyhow.
Correct. Also, I wouldn't bother re-using your Tricross hubs - they werent great when they were new, I'd imagine they're pretty knackered now.
you will be fine with the goldtec hubs! there bullet proof and BETD give a good service. But CTBM knows what he is talking about.

This is also my thinking, unless it works out as a significantly cheaper option.
Hmm these: http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/700c-(622)-wheelset-36h-mavic-open-sport-rims-with-sjsc-fixed-hubs-in-silver-prod18873/ don't look like a bad (cheaper) option, anyone used the hubs? Goldtec on opensport looking about £120 a wheel, getting quite pricey for the commuter...but no doubt a nice wheel.
