Got a singlespeed mtb last year and I think it's time for a new chain.
Got a Surly stainless steel 32 ring on front and DMR 16 sprocket on back. Chain is a KMC Z610HX 3/32.
I think I've done about 2000 miles and the Park chain tool says the chain has had it.
Talking to some other singlespeeders and some they just leave it on there.
I have no idea of how long singlespeed stuff lasts. How will the Surly ring last and the sprocket?
Thanks
Leave chain on till it's pretty much dead*, bang another one on till that dies too (2nd won't last as long) flip the ring and cog and start again, you too can have rings [url=

(not mine)
*it's a fine line between "pretty much dead" and "breaks going up a 1in3", make sure you stick to the correct side of that line!
You either need to do one thing or the other... Either religiously replace your chain to maximise the life of your ring and cog, or run the whole lot into the ground and replace it all at once. I think it's more economic to look after the ring and cog by changing the chain regularly, but I've got Surly and WI ENO in my drivetrain which I want to preserve.

I do that on geared bikes where a new drive-train is quite pricey, but for my SS I just run the ring(£25)/cog(£15)/chain(hand-me-down from geared bike) into the ground.
with chains available for £2.50 changing your chain every couple months may well be the fiscally prudent choice (and save you some pricey dental bills) 🙂
I was going to link to the Matt Magic pics too 🙂
well he does know how to get his moneys worth from drivechains
3 years for my first chain with the Rohloff and only changed because I thought I should. Current chain is 2 years old and I'll run it until it breaks which could easily be another 2 years.
This morning riding to work on the dérailleur equipped bike I snapped a chain that's only 6 months old and a chain checker says is fine.
So for single speed I'd just but a heavy duty KMC chain and run it into the ground. If your reversing your ring and sprocket at the end of the chains life then it's going to be a pretty cheap option. And the only lube I ever use on the hub geared bike is GT85 and the bike is an off road commuter used throughout the winter and on any wet days in the summer.
Cheers for the replies.
I am quite attached to my teeth having spent more on one tooth this year than my bike cost!
Did a climb last weekend that was right leg.......left leg.......right leg.......left leg so strain on the chain can be pretty high!
Hopefully, new KMC singlespeed chain will work with Surly ring but may need a new sprocket. Worth getting a Surly one?
Surely a nice chain must ride better and quieter than a worn out one?
