I am looking for some advice for 29er SS.

What gear sizes are people using ?

I have seen 34-18. Any others ? I used 32-17 on a
26" bike once.

Thanks.

try 34:18 and see - you can always swap to a 19 or 17 if you need to.

(I run 32:17 on my 26" SS due to having weedy knees and crap lungs).

32:18 is about the same as 32:16 on 26" (arround 52" gear)

I use 32:20, but probably should go up to 32:19 to keep the fitness gains coming rather than getting lazy.

32:18 is good for my legs around the Chilterns. I tend to drop to a 19 on the back for bikepacking trips and really big days with lots of hills.

I see 32:18 seems to be the most common.

Something in my head though says bigger wheel (29) requires
bigger front chainring ie. 34.?

Then you will need a bigger rear cog.

32 : 20 for me. Just right for towing a 2 up loaded kiddie trailer around the peak.

4.1m, or 50x28 if you insist on using the more complicated method.
