Considering STW seems to do a sideline in hardcore kayakers/canoeists has anyone any recommendations for freestanding kayak storage pretty please? 🙂
Want to store minimum two (but in the future, likely four) kayaks in a barn I'm building. I want a decent stable freestanding rack (I don't want to be bolting to the walls or floors).
Something along these lines would be excellent (better if I could get one with lockable casters to move it easily) - but that's a US company. Would need something UK or maybe Europe.
Will probably be needing something similar for four bikes too tbh.
I made my own out of treated timber.
Dead easy, nothing fancy. Just a right angle with diagonal braces really.
Depends how handy you are.
Otherwise something like This?
I just use a Scaffold / builders trestle to store my canoe. Super sturdy, pretty cheap and could hold 3 Canadian canoes fairly easy - one on each "shelf". When we has sea kayaks, we could get two per shelf if the boats were on their sides.
Bonus points is it could be quite handy for DIY jobs if / when I ever need a 5' high platform.
Danke. The reason I like the US one is that it looks more robust than the others here. CBA making my own - I'm time-poor enough as it is and although I could do it, I'm loathe to take on yet more DIY 🙂
If DIY isn’t an option, or cobbling something together from scaffold poles then I’d be looking at the Lomo rack and adding some suitable castors
The Lomo rack looks like it's designed to store the boats sitting on their hulls, ie, the same way up as they are paddled. What kind of boats are they, eg, plastic, composite, sea, river? Depending on the material, their weight, and temperature in the barn, it may be better to have them on their sides.
Scaffolding?
Slitting discs cut the tubes much quicker than a regular fat cutting/grinding disc on an angle grinder.
Adjustable and easy to build. The poles and clamps are not usually astronomically expensive (you can often get second hand) and certainly cheaper than some artisan thing.
The kayak (and small dinghy) racks at my current and previous sailing club are built like this.

On time a team of three of us cut and assembled a 3 level rack to take 9 Laser dinghies in a day. This was around 30-40 cuts and about the same number of couplings. With a spouse/friend and the right tools it should be a fairly quick job.
The Link I posted to Karitek is for a rack very similar to the teal rack. They use to have it on their website, but not at the moment.
I considered this rack but went for Keyclamps, I built a kayak rack that bolted to the floor and wall and holds 2 sea kayaks and the ladders. If you know what tubes you want they will cut them to length for you so you have only to bolt it together. If you choose the correct diameter tubes you can get castors that attach in the end of the tubes.
