I'm going to build some wheels for a singlespeed 'cross bike. There are plenty of massively heavy aero wheelsets out there for fixie riders I would like to avoid. Back end needs to be a 120mm OD, by the way - it's an old Specialized Tricross.

I'm keen to get recommendations from peeps. Mavic Open Pros have always been good to me, as have DT spokes. Hubs I'm a little stumped on, however. QR front would be helpful, and I'm scouring eBay for a Hope XC or similar, but any suggestions for the rear, aside from the usual Miche suspects? Thanks in advance...

disc hub with no disc will fit if that helps.
shimano hubs are nice if a bit heavy (C+C) if thats an issue.
goldtec hubs are lovely. they used to only do one - now there is a cheaper version: don't know much about that.

surly on one track hubs are cheap and cheerful.
or novatec superlight hubs

I think for a 120mm rear end, your'e pretty much stuck with track hubs with a screw-on freewheel, so there's plenty of cheaper System-EX/Ambrosio/On-One type stuff that have flipflop fixed/free threads.
Maybe Dia Compe Grand Comp or Surly hubs for a bit more?
After that I think your'e into WI, Paul and Goldtec. I did also see recently that Suntour have released a 120mm cassette hub that takes a short cassette, similar to Hope trials hubs. Probably more than you want to spend though?

Depends if you're looking to run QR or bolt on. I have a single cross and have had similar dilemma. I've got a couple of rear wheels built around old hope screw on hubs with the axle machined down to suit the 120mm spacing. These are getting rarer but come up now and again on ebay or retrobike, easily modified and lightweight.

i've got a Goldtec on the rear of the SSCX and it's performed flawlessly through several years of crud, even went from a 120mm rear end to a 130mm one with a simple axle swap
WI freewheel

front is an old XTR hub that was in the shed 🙂

Thanks all! Really helpful.
I'll probably go for cheap and cheerful cartridge bearing rear and a slightly more spendy front. The rear would need to be bolt on - track ends on the Speccy. I've *love* to buy another Goldtec hub, as I used to run Dracos and loved them to bits. But I'll probably save the spendyness for another set of wheels another time...

This was my spec when I had mine built about 3 years ago, zero problems.

Royce track 120mm rear silver
Royce ultralight front silver
Cadence aero black f28 28r
Sapim cx ray silver

Loved my singlecross so much, had one built in titanium by burls.

i'd go for the more spendy rear myself, fronts are easy to find and cheap anyway, the rear has a lot more work to do so a decent long lasting one is a better investment IMO

Thank you, JoB and ericemel - very sensible advice, especially on the rear hub!
