Guys I'm looking for a new front 32 chainring for my single speed mtb. currently it is fitted with a worn superstar narrow wide which I don't like as seems very slightly oval as chain goes tight then loose. (it isn't an oval chainring) Looking for something that is reasonably cheap.
Any recommendation as most seem to be narrow wide?

I'm 2 months into using a 1/8th chain ring from these guys and it is good so far - they do 3/32nd too

do you need narrow wide (or steel) ? been running a bog standard ally 32 tooth chainring from a triple (fsa iirc) for the last seven years without a guide not dropped it yet (though it's looking pretty worn)

chain goes tight then loose.

Most chains will have spots which are tighter than others, even on perfectly concentric, circular sprockets.

And the issue might be on your crankset/spider, or if bolts were tightened irregularly, pulling the chainring off-centre before everything was cinched up tight.

The tight-slack thing is often caused by the chainring not being mounted perfectly concentric to the BB. Eg on a 4 bolt ring there is a fair bit of play in the mounting bolts meaning it's easy to be not quite concentric.

All good info. Thanks I'll check the mounting and see if I can improve it.

I wouldn't worry about it, just set it up so the tension is correct at the tightest point (i.e. 1/2" of play in the chain) and live with it. As others have said, even if everything is correct then getting the chairing concentric is sometimes nigh on impossible (although some do have shoulders that rest on the spider, but then shimano and sram put them in different places.

Probably no need for anything fancier than this ...

I've just bought one. Not fitted yet. Had a used one on the SS I just sold, 2 years and a couple o thousand Kms with no issues.

I love my oval chainring on mine, it's lasted about 4 years as well. https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/black-by-absoluteblack-narrow-wide-oval-mtb-single-chainring/rp-prod131089

I've had a single speed on and off for the last 15 years and always rated the stainless steel chainrings from Surly and On-one, they both have quite long teeth which are great for holding on the chain although I'll say it again, oval chainrings are really effective when used singlespeed and the absolute black ones are damn good. But if you like your chain quite tight I'd maybe just get an on-one stainless chainring, it may out live your bike. 😏

As above, Surly or On-One stainless.
Job done.

Renthal do a good range, with odd tooth numbers as well (works well for EBB's and getting more life out of the chain) and are pretty hard wearing compared to some others I've used.

Another vote for Surly or On-One stainless. Just about impossible to wear them out.

This is not a part that you should buy in alloy IMO (unless you are a weight weenie racer).
