Hello, I've a potentially daft question about single speed chainrings. Is there a need, or even a use, for narrow wide chainrings on a single speed? I need a new one to replace the worn Truvativ on my Charge Cooker and was wondering where to start. I've a Halo rear cog and 1/8" chain.
Ta very much for any advice.
No, I've just used 1/8 chain rings from Projection Component /Bike Punx with no issues

Nope tension on the chain keeps the chain on.
Not only is there no need they also stop you using a half link just in case you ever wanted to get very specific on rear wheel placement.
currently been running through my supply of old 3x9 ramped alloy middle rings the first one lasted 7 years so I'm good til about 2050 😉
No advantage of NW on singlespeed even if using a 3/32 cog and chain. If anything the NW ring is noisier and meshes badly with that width chain, especially in gritty mud IMO.
I can recommend Velo Solo rings as I am sure many other here will too 🙂
are there any oval narrow/narrow rings out there?
Still some life in my 35T Goldtec One Key, but not much.
Agree with the above - NW isn't required so long as you're not using a spring tensioner for chain tension. Also, as @DanW says - NW is noisy.
We do 3mm stainless rings for 1/8" chains. I won't link to our shop because @dawson (ta!) has already.
Yes, we make all our own chainrings and stuff (UK manufacturing FTW!) The headset spacers were bought in ages ago from a wholesaler that was clearing out though and I've been trying to shift them for the last 6 or 7 years 🤣
The weight difference on a steel chainring is neither here nor there because it's where any extra weight should (ideally) be anyway, I reckon.
Thanks @kayla1 - just for the avoidance of doubt, it is Bikepunx isn't it?
are there any oval narrow/narrow rings out there?
Very few I think.
I would also love a "normal" tooth profile for a SRAM direct mount chainring but such a things havn't existing for years 🙁
Nice sticker!
I got a super cheap 'Snial' (WTF?) narrow wide wonky chainring off eBay when I needed to build something up in a rush. It said up to 11 speed but that's a big fat lie as it doesn't do 10 speed chains. It gets on OK with 1 1/8th, though, so it's on my singlespeed. As mentioned above, it's a lot noisier than trad chainrings. Only potential benefit i can think of is if you run your chain super slack. I've got a backlog of old 14BCD chains and a half-stripped Deore crankset I'll get to eventually so will get that sorted before the Snial conks out.
In short: if you're going out and buying one, get one from Kayla...

NW works fine with a half link, the 'gap' in the chain is bigger than the 'wide' part of the ring. I run a hope narrow/wide with a half link chain as its what I had spare.
Thanks, I stand corrected.
@kayla1 - just put an order in for a 32t chainring, ta very much.
