Are there any reasonably priced single ring chainsets about ? I've heard people having issues about going single ring with a triple chainset with the train dropping etc. Looking for something reasonably priced for a budget build, does anybody have any ideas ?

Cheers

Middleburn UNO looks lively. But all you need is an unramped ring and short bolts to fit it to your standard crank. And a guide of some sort.

Don't even need short bolts if you get a decent aftermarket ring. My renthal takes the full length ones happily.

Depends what you call budget. CRC had some Raceface Deus single ring chainsets recently which with the 10% off came in under £100 with a BB (although that's probably made of cheese if my experience is anything to go by). Lovely chainset though.

For a proper budget build a cheap set of used Shimano cranks and an aftermarket ring is your best bet - although you'll probably still be knocking on £50.

Cferg - If you get a singlespeed specific chainring it's no different (within reasons etc). It can be a little "funny" with ramped rings but if you get the right unramped one, not sure why you'd NEED new cranks.

Thanks for the replies all, to the Middleburn Uno I had a look at the chainset(with crank and rings, no BB) which is a good price and looks like a good option.

Bol - Just had a look on CRC, found a few RaceFace options that are right what Im looking for thanks very much.

Atlaz - I was unsure of this though had considered it, just thought that singlespeed chainsets might play up with the likes of a 10 speed cassette (or any speed for that matter) with the angles the chain would be making ? I'm probably talking mince though.

Cheers all.

Just stick an unramped ring in the middle-ring position of a regular set of cranks. Works perfectly fine and allows more options should you wish to add gears at a later stage.

I've looked at RF singles before but now won't touch them with a bargepole - I've got a tendency for knackering the axle splines.

£13.90 plus postage for a Nexus. Only a choice of 33 or 38 teeth though. Plus the cost of a BB.
