ive run a hope single ring up front for about 6 months now, new chain on last night and it made a righttttt noise when climbing, like the chain suddenly didnt fit the front chainring, it seemed to jump as it left the bottom of the front ring....
it eventually got quieter as the ride went on, so im guessing the new chain started to gel with the old ring up front....
so im guessing its new front single ring time? ive done alot of miles on it, no doubts...but the thing is the teeth dont remotely look knackered like on a normal set of shimano chainrings, ie not pointy etc....
so are single rings different in this respect? i dont mind getting a new one, but if my new chain will just gel on it after a few rides and not damage the chain then it seems pointless swapping it
Try reversing the chainring.
arent the hope single rings specific to being run one way, there is no directional wear on the teeth by the way, in the past with normal chainrings you can tell when they are really worn as they go really sharp etc
Had exactly the same issue with a new chain on a Midleburn ring, it looked good but the chain was plucking when released. I have now gone to an On One stainless SS ring. Only £20, I can't say how good it will be long term, but it still looks as new after 4 mths and chain runs so much cleaner. I was amazed how much of the black crap on my chain had come from the old alloy ring 😯
fivespot - sounds the same as me then, ill put it down to wear.....bizarre it looks fine still.....
i cant grumble i think i put it on in june so its had a hell of a lot of use and 2 chains out of it, in every condition going
i'll order another hope i think, people did say you'll wear a single ring quicker than a 3x10 setup, which logic suggests, but i defo used to wear my middle ring quicker than 7ish months, so ive had better use out of the hope one

I can't see a good reason not to use a stainless front ring - Surly here - on a single-ring set-up unless you're really concerned about saving a few grammes? I'd trade that for a bit more durability every time, but obviously that's just my personal take.
I've always found that the Peak destroys aluminium chainrings rapidly, even with fancy Middleburn Hardcote or whatever it's called, treatment etc.
cheers folks - interesting messiah - but as my chainring is pretty much the same (to look at) all the way around im guessing the whole things shot, will keep that in mind for future reference
never really thought about the SS ones TBH, just remember picking up the hope in the shop and thinking jesus thats light....
as i said above i cant grumble really its had 7 months odd hard use so id say thats pretty good going
anybody know if the on one s/s ring is compatible with 10 speed?
pryally......i've got a feeling that a ss chain ring needs a 1/8 but a 3/32 is needed for a 10 speed cassette ie thicker chain for ss. Not sure what, if any, damage to your cassette running a 1/8 would do but I'm sure someone will be along soon to advise.
I turned my Hope 32t around when I changed all the rest of the drivetrain. Seems to work ok but it's only had three rides on it so far (and then the mech imploded...) It looks like it won't work because the mounting holes are asymmetric but it actually ended up in almost exactly the same place. If the current ring is worn then most of the wear will be on the front edges of the teeth (looking the top of the ring), so flipping it will move those to the back edges. My chainring looks barely worn too (and had had about 1000 offroad miles on it in all weathers).
it states on the website suitable for 8 and 9 speed but nothing about 10 speed?
If it's 9 speed compatible then it's 10 speed compatible - it's only the outside of a 10 speed chain that is narrower, the inside is the same as 9 speed.
anybody know if the on one s/s ring is compatible with 10 speed?
As above. I'm using the Surly ring on a 1x10 set-up and it's fine if you want empirical proof. The On-One should be the same.
