Is it better for xc? I live in quite a hilly area so will it affect climbing performance?

There are roughly 1295 threads on this. Have a read.
It saves some weight and is more simple, no one can tell you what gears you need for your local riding/fitness/bike/riding style though. If you need lower gears than it offers then yes, it will affect climbing performance.
To summarise - it's personal
