I picked up the lifeline turbo kit with speed and cadence sensors while they were cheap. Very happy.

I have signed up to zwift and it is far more complicated than I want, and more expensive.

Is there an app or software, either widows or android, which allow me to use either bluetooth or ant+ to log my HR, speed and cadence, over say 1 minute splits? I'm a bit of a dinosaur and I'd be happy to write down splits to put into a spreadsheet. I get on very well with the PM4 monitor on my Concept 2 rowing machine 🙂

I dont have a garmin.

Is there really nothing out there for me? Or does everyone just pay £15 a month for Zwift?

I've just finally started using the turbo/ zwift setup that I put together in 2022....can't say that I'm blown away with Zwift tbf....I'm not a gamer, so maybe it's that, but i feel like the user interface is awful!

Just did my first ever race, and did enjoy that, so will probably just keep the subscription for a few months in winter. Isn't there a free online racing app too? Possibly with some fairly dubious links to a petrostate? I may be misremembering.

Decent free apps for what you want did seem quite thin on the ground when I was looking.

I’ve used TrainerRoad and Zwift and like both in different ways. But TrainerRoad is even more expensive than Zwift so that doesn’t help you.

Its not free I don’t think - but Xert might be worth a look - think it’s cheaper and less like a game

this is what you need:

Mywhoosh is the free (/Saudi sportswashing) Zwift thing. I've not tried it as there's no MacOS version yet.

Tried Zwift but didn't like how complicated it seemed; hated the graphics too. Then tried Rouvy which I much prefer. It's more like just going for a ride. Still a monthly subscription though.

I quite like MyWhoosh. Free and simple to use. Jump on the turbo and ride round some places on the Arabian peninsula, Belgium & Australia.

Thank you, not tried to connect everything yet, but this is precisely the level of blandness I was looking for!

The wahoo app will probably do what you need. I use it to dual record from a stages crank pm, i.e. it doesn't only talk to wahoo equipment. It can connect cadence, HR, power and a controlable turbo.

Hmm,
https://flux-web.vercel.app/
looks interesting! Nice and simple.

Has anyone tried it or got any links to reviews?

I use the Flux app with my cheapo Thinkrider trainer. Not much to review really - if you can get it to connect (and I had zero problems using my Samsung phone), it just makes your turbo do what you want it to.

Yeah, I did a quick test workout last night and it seemed fine, and I could export a .fit file to load up to Garmin (and then Strava).

Does anyone know how to make .zwo files (Zwift workouts?) without having to subscribe to Zwift?

Use zwift. You can log in without subscribing and ride a certain amount free each month as a trial. I'd imagine you could create workouts, never ride and grab the zwo file from your zwift folder.

I downloaded 'Golden Cheetah' the other day after hearing it was the free equivalent to Trainer road... Not an Effing clue how to set it up or make use of it, definately a tool for proper geeks.
As I've scored a Cheap BKool Smart trainer I thought I'd try their app for free, but it went and bounced my payment method for the trial period and I gave up after that, so I've not been able to try it (I did at least confirm that the trainer could pair with the PC though). IndieVelo has apparently closed their free Beta now(?) so will be coming back as a paid app soon I assume. Rouvy is cheaper than Zwift so could be a viable alternative for skinflints.

The thing is, a bit like with Strava, Zwift has become the common/ubiquitous pretend cycling platform now hasn't it, I know several people already on zwift SO I think I'll probably be coughing up for a monthly sub soon, and just making sure to cancel it in spring so that I'm prompted start going outdoors again once the sun comes back...

Does the Flux thing work on a PC?

It does appear to. That's quite cool - I'm never that bothered about the VR bit of Zwift etc. and just stick a video on. You can get free workouts from Trainer Day.

Shame you can't import completed workouts into Strava, but looks like you can via Garmin Connect.

Correct, assuming you've linked your Garmin and Strava accounts

So looking back at this thread and browsing the suggested options a bit more, Trainer Day and Flux look potentially very useful to me as I kind of want to use indoor training to try and baseline my fitness and then build some climbing power and ideally improve recovery for spring/summer...

I'm assuming from reading the TD blog and various other training waffle that with the free version of Trainer Day or with Flux I could do some type of ramp test to try and understand my current 'baseline' FTP better(?).

I've got a smart trainer now with speed, cadence and HR sensors, and a PC specifically to run it all with so really the apps/software ...

I think I will end up wanting to "Gamify" my indoor cycling with either Rouvy, FulGaz or Zwift just to keep me interested to some extent, but I think I might just use the available trial periods to try them and pick one that suits.

Flux has a ramp test built in already though I've not tried that one to completion, so I don't know whether it actually calculates your FTP. But it should be fairly easy to work it out once you know your ramp test failure point.
