Fitting new cables and have removed old ones. Have threaded new cable through the shifters, through the housing and through the rear mech and tightened. However, when I move the gear shifter the rear mech does'nt move - what have I done wrong? (old XT shifters and XTR rear mech)
I'm sure there's a simple solution but...

Is the cable nipple located in the correct position in the lever, it sounds like youve installed it incorrectly.

Undo the cable from the mech and hold it in your hand, pulling on it. Shift with the shifter - can you feel the cable getting pulled through? If not, then either the cable isn't installed in the shifter right, or the shifter is screwed?
At a guess.
