Looking to do the CtC Marches and Castles way this Spring. Have the GPX, want to start looking at cutting into day long segments. Be useful to be able to see distance and elevation. I have tried it in Garmin Connect before remembering what a pile of poo that app is. Most apps - either phone or web have this as a premium feature.

I only want to do it once! (well three or four times). I used to use BIKEGPX but that seems to have gone. Going to download the filesto my Garmin head unit to follow. So need to be able to export to GPX

Mac/Browser preferred or on the phone if necessary.  Anything out there?

Oh tried it in Strava routes as well (which I currently pay for)- they've clearly taken the UI template from Garmin and made it worse!

I used GPX Studio to do exactly this for the KAW.

I've always used 'vi' but I suspect that isn't very helpful!

GPX Studio looked promising but for some reason doesn't show elevation data for the supplied GPX

BikeHike might do it - shall have a proper look later.

Hardcore.

I took the files and uploaded them to Strava for sharing with ride buddies/syncing with my Wahoo Roam purposes. The elevation data seemed to be present and correct but maybe Strava added it back in or something.

Garmin Basecamp is what I would/do use.

+1 ...did the KAW last year after splitting with GPX Studio

Hadnt noticed that as I do have the Marcher way GPX downloaded too as I was intending to also do it this year. However, having split it, the extracted GPX has elevation data when imported into OS app

I'll give GPX Studio a go and see if I get the elevation when I import into Garmin Connect. Ta. I remember trying to use GPS Babel a while ago. Although not fondly 😉

@ScotRoutes

Re Garmin Basecamp.

Handy bit of software that thank you. Just need to undetstand how it works with the more detailed maps in Garmin Connect or OS Maps.

Cheers

@nickingsley - if you have OS Maps on your Garmin and plug it into your PC using a USB lead, Basecamp will actually display the OS Map. I've not tried, but that might work with any other maps on your Garmin too.

If the file has elevation data, GPX.studio will display it. If it doesn't have elevation data, click the little icon with a mountain on it and request elevation data from Mapbox.

@scotroutes I haven't got OS Maps on my Garmin 1030.

I was using Garmin Basecamp on my PC which has OS Maps on it as does my phone.

It was just that the Garmin Basecamp appears to have far less information on it than either Garmin Connect or OS Maps. Think I need to play with it more.

Cheers

I'd echo Basecamp it's free, meeting a key criteria (for me at least), but also it is very capable and if you have a Garmin device plugged into the PC it will recognise it and work with the loaded maps/routes/data directly, which can be very useful. You can also generate files and fire them off through the interwebs to connect and upload to the device remotely.

The main thing missing from basecamp is perhaps simplicity of use though, there's normally at least three ways to do anything you might need to, and it's seldom intuitive to a muggle like me. set aside time to learn it (and re-learn if you've not played with it for a while), watch lots of YT tutorials and expect to be frustrated, until you suddenly manage to generate exactly what you wanted...

I had a go based ok @scotroutes recommendation. I did use it a while back but I'd forgotten what a "wooooaaahh what is ALL THAT STUFF" it has going on 😉 Ended up with a 7 day trial with RideGPS and it worked brilliantly. I might even keep the Sub as it does everything I'm ever going to need and nothing more. Found it very intuitive to use.

Timely thread. I tried Basecamp and it was way too complicated for what I needed. Tried GPX studio and it did the trick nicely.

I use RidewithGPS and just trim the route down, save as 'Day 1' then reload the original, trim, 'Day 2' etc
