Been thinking about having a ride up simonsode at the weekend and have seen some trail footage on youtube. I have had a little glance on strava and there are a few segments etc but the trail in the vid looked to be man made rather than a trail that was shared with walkers.
Can anyone shed any light on what is up there or is it just going to be a case of exploring to see what i can find?
Any info that can make my explore better would be good.
Cheers

What do you mean by manmade, berms, drops and stuff.

If you mean the flagged path, that's just the footpath along the top of the crags. Personally I probably wouldn't ride that as it's a pretty popular footpath - it's a haul up at the start too, especially if it's icy.

Harwood forest is full of fireroads which are fine for cruising about and finding the odd beautiful spot but not fantastic riding.

The descent down to Hepple Whitefield is great - long, fast and natural and I've never met anyone coming up it.

The carriageway up at gimmerknowe's utterly beautiful but fairy unexciting technically.

There's some built trails in the woods above Great Tosson but I've never had much success finding stuff worth riding. There's usually people knocking about on big bikes who you could ask.

edit: there's a good chance there'll be snow and ice up there at the weekend.

Yep that is why I was asking, the vid of the footpath along the top of simonside, makes it look really good, the best bits are the natural rocky sections, just do it in the evening, when all the red socks are having tea and scones, I was underwhelmed by the Hepple BW, but then I guess i'm used to riding the gnar tee hee!.

Like @lemonysam said, Hepple Whitfield is a great fast flowing decent and then head back up if you want a good leg workout 😆

Bikes on the Simonside ridge between Saturday morning and Sunday tea time is pretty much frowned upon as it is a public footpath. NNP rangers are aware that it is now a stravafest and are doing their utmost to prevent this. Apart from a Wednesday (local walking group) its not too bad to ride.
Rothbury does have more than its fair share of cheeky trails but as you'd expect, cheeky and public internet, don`t go together 😉
A week on Tuesday if you fancy 🙂
Oh Hepple Whitefield, if you "ride" it it is brilliant,if you bimble its boring, but there are quite a few locals that do ride up it so be careful.

I don't get this, it's a Landrover track, tortoise or hare, you still have to ride up there.

Ok will have a look on the OS map later at the above mentioned areas,

this is what i must have seen on youtube, may be worth a little explore and see if i see anyone on big bikes.

Im pretty local so should be able to get an idea of conditions too 🙂

Ahem, the Forestry Commission harvested in "that area" and pretty much mashed everything.
The footpaths look to be getting reinstated at the moment but will take a while to settle.
I can view this from my window 😉 Just saying..

Not everything, unless they've done it in the past few weeks - I'm sure I saw some stuff last time we were walking up there.

As above, the ride along the ridge is very good but I wouldn't do it at the weekend at peak times as its a footpath (the old BW is now closed due to errosion). You'll probably be fine very early morning or late evening though. Lots of very good trails on both sides of Rothbury (Simonside and Carriage drive side), just need to get out and have a look for them. I'll be up there on Sunday Rob.

Not sure yet timythetinyhorse. Possibly a double header with Thrunton early doors and Rothbury later on with the Mrs and one of her friends.

But if you venture away from the obvious, you may just find something that is a bit more interesting. PUBLIC FORUM
I can't see this because there's a hill in the way... but Tuesday is still free 😉
