Spotted this on Burrington earlier, it seems they have been putting in some new posts presumably for way-marking the paths as they are mostly at junctions but this one was just plonked in the middle of a 'bomb-hole'.

The photo doesnt really show how silly it looks in real life but I tired to capture the view from head height:

Admittedly it is a footpath but anyone who knows the area will be well aware that it's used by cyclists and horse riders and is well placed for a nice pedal/knee to post impact just off the normally well used line through the hole.

Just spotted this little fella before the dog fortunately:

Mm mm, think you've answered your own answer! Is it private or public land? If it's public land the post may fall over in a gentle breeze one day......... 😆

SNAKE!

As it's a footpath you can't really expect the local authority/landowner to consider users that aren't supposed to be there. It might even have been put there for no other purpose than to discourage people from cycling through the bomb hole.

I was guessing it was to stop people cycling through the bomb hole but surely it would have been safer to put a larger post in that protrudes to the same height as the rest of the posts above the level ground around the hole instead they used a post that is barely visible until you are heading right for it?

Maybe I should take some scaffold planks and make a short section of north shore over it? 😀

Snake is an Adder, seen a few of them now up there.

I might walk into it on a night time walk as it's not at the edge of the footpath 🙂

Also it's supposed to be an AONB and a random post stuck in a bomb hole looks silly and serves no purpose as there is no junction and a very clear route.

Whereabouts is it? Can't quite place it.

Take the wide rocky route (bridleway on the left) up from the car park at Burrington Ham and take the wide footpath to the left at the cross roads at the top of the slope as though you are heading to the rocky bit with views of the airport and Blagdon.

Agree with that. This is no justification but perhaps the contractors only had one length of post available to them.

Just move it to higher ground. Sat in a bomb hole like that it'll just sit in water and rot out. You'd be saving them money in the long run.

yeah I was thinking it won't last long sat in the water at the bottom of the hole. I might have to cock my leg on it whenever I am up there to speed it up it's demise. Public service and all that.

Tried to wiggle it to see if it was 'official' or not, stuck pretty fast but not concreted from what I could see.

I doubt it will rot particularly fast where it is. Most of those divots and holes are solution features from water erosion of the underlying limestone. As a consequence they're probably the best drained areas of soil.

Sat in a bomb hole like that it will just 'sit in water' and rot out. You'd be 'saving them money' in the long run occifer.

yeah there is a groove in the landscape leading up to it which I have always assumed was caused by water finding a route. The bit just along there gets lots of surface water/mud but that stretch stays quite nice and dry. One of the reasons it's our default place to go for a dog walk when the weather has not been great.

On another note, spotted hundreds of fresh 4-5mm holes in the nice dry soil on the slope leading to the rocky bit today. Was wondering what they were from and then spotted a wasp coming out of one. Never noticed it before.

They do odd thinks on top of hills these days.Few years ago they put up some odd hazel fencing around these mounds on the top of the Purbecks saying they were ancient burial mouns.I had ridden over them for the last 15 years. Then in 2011 a National trust woman had a right go at me for riding over them saying had I not read the signs.Yet cows are up there as well.Year later all gone very weird and people are riding back over them as they use ODD.
