I'm fed up with the bottle banging about on rough trails. I've got an inherent distrust of the cage less types. What cage is good for securing a bottle on a mountain bike?

A boggo metal one, with the cage squeezed in a bit to give it a tighter grip

I just use the standard plastic Decathlon ones, and seem great.

Wot Fossy said.
Elite Ciussi, i have some of them that are 25 years old. Still going strong, except the paints faded *really* bad.

The "red" ones on my old race bike have probably done 150000+ miles over the years. They are the only original bit left other than the frame. They are pink now though.

One of the blue ones on my old race mtb did probably 10 seasons, the other i broke slinging the bike over my shoulder after about 5 or 6 seasons.

Blackburn Alloy one for me, seem to be one of the best for a bit of bending to aid bottle retention, so obviously I use them on my road bike and some crappy plastic side-loading nonsense on my MTB like a genius...

What are you using now? I've got Leyzne side loaders, Specialized Zee and some boggo Specialized thing on the go and all are silent

I have cheapo Zefal plastic cages, mrs_oab and other more expensive Bontrager cages, I also have unbranded alloy cage bent 'toigt'...
All seem to work well with Zefal or Camelback bottles, no rattles.
A couple of our cheap bottles do move around though, so I think it is as much about the bottle as the cage.

Zee plus camelbak bottle is a good tight fit. Also have some bontrager cages that I almost can’t get a camelbak bottle out of when I want to.

So, what matt said- get a fat bottle

Zee II, silent on two MTBs on Lake District bridleways.

Specialized Zee and a plastic bottle on the gravel bike, no noise whatsoever.

EDIT: I think I happen to use Camelbak bottles as well so that makes sense with what other people have posted.

As said above, a squashed olds hill metal one does the job (steel, aluminium or Ti depending on your budget) but I use a Fidlock bottle and that’s silent on my HT.

What about a Ti King Cage?

+1 for Specialized Zee. They're really rather good.

Not quite standard but I use a Zefal Spring with a tie wrap between the two sides (not too tight) and High5 bottles which is both indestructible and enduro-safe. I've had both steel and alloy cages snap due to metal fatigue.

A boggo metal one, with the cage squeezed in a bit to give it a tighter grip

Or a nice Stainless Steel one, with the cage squeezed in a bit to give it a tighter grip

Rattling cages are rare in my experience. Have you considered it might be the bottle? Also, given that we're generally talking about a couple of millimetres, it can be very easy to add them with a bit of tape. A loose cage can be turned into one with a vice-like grip in a matter of seconds.

Bontrager Bat cage, made from recycled fishing nets and the grabbiest cage I've used by a way thanks to a combination of tight fit and thicker than most plastic/recycled fishing net gunge. That said, as a few have already mentioned, I've never had an issue with rattling bottles / cage, even off road.

I use a Specialized side loading one on my rigid mtb with high 5 750ml bottles. Not had any rattles or noise.

How is a bottle cage rattly?? Even the traditional shape ones with a 500ml bottle, I've never heard of it - and if the bottle is slightly loose, you just bend the cage down for a tighter fit.

I use the Mt Zoom side entry ones because I like big bottles and haven't got much space. I think I've dropped one bottle once in about a decade.
Not the cheapest out there but they do actually work
