I have a new frameset on the way. Matte black with allegedly peelable stickers, so in theory it should be a good base for a Spray.Bike job. I've got some Quasar (pink) and Mustang (orange) kicking about from a previous effort, along with some lacquer, though I could buy something else.
Obviously, stick a photo up if you can. I'd be interested to know:
- What colours you used (the colour reproduction on the Spray.Bike site is terrible)
- How durable you've found it (and how much prep/lacquering work you put in)
- How easy it is to get a good fade or a good masking edge (I've got a selection of tapes; I assume Frog Tape is probably the best choice)
I'm not sure yet whether to do a full-coverage job; to mask off and paint some bands and blocks to break up the black (my original thought was to do this, pink at the front fading to orange at the back); maybe to even sand the whole thing down to bare aluminium, brasso it, then lacquer it; or simply not to bother and just leave it black.
Bring forth your inspiration and pearls of wisdom, please 🙂
Ooh yes please. I'm hoping to have a go at my little one's next balance bike (currently a scuffed up and tatty black). Was thinking of trying tog et some raw steel and other colours on there, maybe some flames..

Have a look on youtube for the GCN video where one of the presenters uses it to paint an old trek.
From what I could make out it looked ok from a distance but in the closeup shots it looked pretty rubbish. Very dull and orange peeley / mottled. This could be down to his abilities more than the paint though.
I would be interested to try it but it sounds too good to be true.
Yeah, as I said I’ve used it before (link above). I deliberately didn’t do much prep, to test their claims.
I wasn’t impressed with the durability, and the finish was so-so. However, I got a better finish when I tested it on a bit of plain old steel pipe—though it still didn’t seem very tough.
I know there are people out there who’ve put a lot more effort in, though, so I’m curious to know how they’ve found it in the longer term.
I did a frame and fork with a mix of matte black and metal flake lacquer. The matte paint is dead easy to apply and much less messy than normal spray paints. I'd agree that it covers very thinly and I'd be tempted to get some of the putty for my next one.
The lacquer was maddening - even after shaking it for over a minute, the propellant seemed to alternate in force between asthmatic mouse and Picolax trouser cough. This meant lots of paint runs, fine sanding, and attempted reapplication, only for exactly the same thing to happen again.
Durability-wise it isn't great either. After about 12 months of occasional riding it was looking really shabby. The plus side is that I had enough black left to redo it.
To be honest once you've factored in the cost of a couple of tins plus their exorbitant shipping, there's not much saving on a professional job from a generic industrial estate powder coater, and I'd probably trade a durable good-looking finish for dreams of a three-way fade. I was very pleased with my sparkly matching stem though.

These are a few of my efforts. I wouldn't use frog tape. Try and get proper 3m fineline tape. I would use solvent basecoat in aerosol if you can for base coat especially if you are masking over it. If you can get it basecoated then take it to a body shop for clear coat it will look a lot better imo

Thanks. They look rather good, at least as far as I can tell from small images on a phone. The grey one certainly looks to have a nice smooth gloss finish; how many coats of paint/lacquer was that?
And what's the name of the purple colour in the last one?
Well I work in a body shop so I have an advantage. The clear coat is sikkens two pack paint. And the purple is a tvr colour which I tinted up to flip a bit more.
Did this recently for my daughter. Dont reckon its gonna be very durable but its well easy to use and i've got a fair bit left so will touch it up need be.
Don't think i'd use it on a well used mtb, but road bikes don't get bashed around too much.

No they were done with water based base coat and two pack clear coat. I wouldn't trust much else other than powder coat to be honest. Your best bet is to do the base coat yourself and ask someone else to clear coat it with a good two pack clear. Anything else won't shine the same or be as durable imo
Why are you showing them then if the OP is asking specifically for Spray.Bike results?
Very confusing, had me thinking they were done with Spray.Bike and looked great which clearly isn't the case.
