Had to buy in dirt as all I had was loamy stuff that won't pack down. First ride today, already adjusting stuff. Learning as I go.

Sam, that looks brilliant. Would love to ride that.

My missus loves her garden, as do I, so there is a limit to what I'm allowed.

Not a pump track, more individual features...

Things I've learned from today's test riding.

My talent doesn't stack up to my dreams! The small doubles I'd built in are too tight for the space and when I had enough speed for them I'd arrive at the berm going too fast. They are going to get turned into rollers and I'll keep this a PUMP track.

The berms could be steeper. Although getting it to stay solid might be troublesome. Maybe a whacker plate might help. Maybe even surface the berm? The first berm I built had a week of rain on it and that's pretty hard, so perhaps it'll weather in.

Which leads me to a final point.... I'm bad a packing wet dirt. It just seems to slide off the dirt underneath. Hopefully I'll get the hang of it. It must just be a technique thing.

I'm fairly lucky to have a decent amount of space in Queensland, and even luckier to have a wife that's let me get away with using some of it as a bike track "for the kids" 😂

It's taken heaps of balls ups to get to the stage I'm at. Lots more work still required... A tabletop (v.3 and still needs refining) that leads into a 180 berm right then a drop into a 90 right into an s-berm, down a couple of small rollers into a fastish rainforest run, into ferns, over a tree around another berm (in progress) then a steep climb back to the start. Installed a skinny today.
Would post photos/vids if it wasn't such a pain.

... Behind our property is hundreds of acres of privately owned and unused woodland that would be amazing to build downhill tracks in. It's not accessible and it would be obvious I'd done it. Doesn't stop me from dreaming.

@sam_underhill it takes a bit of perseverance...and you have to absolutely drench it. There's some good YouTube vids.
I use a rake-hoe, haven't seen Europeans using them but they are awesome for cutting, shifting and packing dirt. Can't believe Brendan and Jonesy aren't wise to this.

That rake-hoe is not dissimilar to the BTR Fab trail tool - https://www.btr-fabrications.com/products/trail-tool/ The track looks amazing Sam!

Give @macramsay a follow on Instagram, him and a few mates have built a brilliant one out the back of the flats in Glasgow during the lockdown.

Yeah - looks pretty similar. Great tool. Mine is all metal, weighs a lot which helps with backing down.

@sam_underhill - didn't notice the photo. Looks like a good use of the yard ... and wetting all that down to pack it would get very messy! 🙂

Here's mine.
Built over the course of a long weekend and takes up a space of about 10 metres by 8. Really happy with how it turned out, it flows well and the 2 smallest rollers are just about double-able.
It works better clockwise than anti clockwise, but I think it'll stay as it is for now.
I'll seed the backs of the berms with some meadow flower seed and it should look pretty nice by te end of the year.
