niche I know, but I'm considering putting bar ends on the 29er with the existing wide flat bars (widish these days at 685mm).

If you're running bar ends on a wide flat bar, how did does it feel? I tried to 'simulate' it a bit on the weekend ride, but it all just felt a bit odd to have the hands in that position on wide bars.

I like that setup. Wouldn't go any wider though.

I've got 685mm EA70 bars with bar ends.

Feels fine to me though TBH with wide bars I rarely use the bar ends except on the road.

685 mm is not wide at all by 2013 standards! In fact, its pretty narrow.

Even mainstream brands like Race Face are making 785 mm (31") wide flat bars.

Loaded makes one that are 810 mm (32") wide.

And I'm sure that there are wider ones out there as well.

For downhill riding, yes.

For XC / trail riding with barends, it would be daft.

I was an early 'adopter' of bar ends BITD and kind of always missed them, to the point of often putting my hands on the ends of the bars when linking together trails with road sections for eg.

These are on the stock 700mm bars. Fitted them from day one - this was fresh out the box*:

*so excuse the poor snapshot!

Great stuff, I'm convinced it's a good idea to at least try now 🙂

I use K force 670s with bar ends and really would not want to go much wider with bar ends on single track. Catching bar ends on stuff is bad news. You'd be surpised how much bracken/branches brushes off bars that catches and yanks on bar ends.

ps they feel great and 15mm is neither here nor there so go for it - love bar ends!

There's definitely a width at which bar ends cease to be a good thing. And a lot of v. wide bars are also quite swept, which I think puts bar ends in the wrong position. That lot above look fine, but I use a 730mm bar for normal ridings, and they are definitely not a good thing on those.
