Morning All,

Clicked "buy" on a 2019 Sumggler Frame going at a good price (one of the few deals out there just now!) and swapping parts from my Orange Crush 29er over to the Smuggler.

Keen to see other builds and interested particularly in what the general consensus is on rear tyre given the mud clearance is really tight on them. I have a WTB Trail Boss 2.4 earmarked for it, its narrow for a 2.4 so should be about the same as the 2.3 DHR2.

Cheers, Dave

This was mine. 2017 model year.

https://flic.kr/p/27aSXe5

https://flic.kr/p/26TFLcp

I had a coil shock on it for a while

https://flic.kr/p/23YiVyC

Not sure what's changed between model years but 2.3 was the biggest I put in there. Probably a Hans Damf. Even then it didn't leave much clearance for muddy conditions.

https://flic.kr/p/22X2ZCT

Did some epic rides on it including a very snowy Gap ride at the end of 2017. Great bike, fun with a 140mm fork, 115mm on the back always felt like more. Esp with that coil. Not light tho and mud clearance was a pain.

This was mine, think it was a 2018 model. Clearance was ok on the Alu model with the DHR2 that I ran.

A few changes now but 2.4 fits fine on 30mm inner rims.  Love the bike, super capable

oooh... give me a week and i will be able to post mine (almost finished building).

2019 Smuggler Carbon (matt black)

Pike Ultimates (well to be strictly correct, the 35mm-stanchion Revelation RC's with the guts pulled out and a shiny Charger 2.1 damper set up added which makes it a Pike Ultimate)

Super Deluxe piggyback shock (will be fitted once it gets back from TfTuned where it is being 'de-Yeti'd), but in the meantime, the standard Deluxe RT is on there)

Bontrager carbon wheels

GX group with Absolute black oval ring and KMC gold chain

Renthal cockpit

etc etc

Tyres are presently the standard 2.3" DHF / DHR II combo which works on the back for clearance. I have a tan-wall Ardent 2.25" enroute for the back (2.4" up front) which I will try out as they should be a bit quicker rolling than the Minion combo... we shall see.

As has already been said, I think the carbon has a little less clearance than the alloy, but aside from that, it is a really smart frame.

got a bit of a black/gold theme going although pretty subtle...

can't wait to get it out on the trails 🙂

Great! Good to know that the 2.4 fits. I have DT481 wheels and a spare 2.4 DHR2 in the garage which I was hoping would fit, if not the 2.4 Trail Boss or a Minion SS (for whats left of the summer) should fit ok.

So, excuse my ignorance, there must have been a revision at some point as the one I have ordered is 120mm rear not 115.

I have 140mm Pikes to put on it, 481/pro4 combo, XT 4 pots, SLX everything else, brand X dropper, just need to get a 780 bar sorted for it. Mine is anno blue and will look crap on the orange Smuggler.

Mine is the alloy one and hoping it wont be too heavy. It's a burly bike from what I read so I will forgive some weight for strength and longevity.

Glued to the window today waiting for TNT to arrive!!!

Went to 120mm in 2018.  highly recommend 150mm at the front. Gets you into all sorts of trouble 😃

I'm actually going to get a new frame soon, but will.probably repurpose the smuggler to a lighter trail build.back to air shock, exo tyres etc

This is mine:

150 mm Dvo diamond non boost and ccdb inline.

I think it has a 2.4 Trail Boss with 29mm inner rim width in the rear and clearance is fine.

Tried to fit a 210mm dropper but it hit the shock pivot, running 170mm Reverb now.

I was thinking on upgrading to a Sight but I think I’ll keep this one and add a -2 deg angleset.

I ran the rear with too little pressure until I got a Shockwiz, so much better now...

2018 onwards is when they went to 120mm, as I think someone else pointed out. I actually sold mine as I just didn't get on with it as much as my original one from 2015.

Its just arrived. Its heavier than I thought but seems like a very well made frame. Forks are due back in 2 weeks and will start the build. Headset ordered, as is dropper post. Everything else will just swap straight over.

Until then I will need to slum it on the she-bike.

Okay, the bike is almost ready (will take it for its first run in Peaselake tomorrow as a celebration for finishing my 14-day (return to the UK from somewhere far safe, but BoJo has his head too far up his arse to realise) quarantine.

Still a few more bits to swap over and fit (namely shock, saddle and possibly tyres), but here are the pics:-

The full build spec is as follows:-

2019 Smuggler Carbon frame (large)
Rockshox Pike Ultimates (equivalent as started as Rev RC's) with Charger 2.1RC damper and Slik matt gold decals
Rockshox Super Deluxe rear shock (still to be fitted) with Slik matt gold decals.
Bontrager Line 30 Carbon wheelset
Maxxis DHF/DHR II tyres (2.30"), set up tubeless with Stans
Sram GX Eagle groupset
Absolute Black 32t oval ring
KMC gold chain
Sram G2 RSC brakeset with Centreline (180m f&r) rotors and gold ti' caliper bolts
Renthal Apex 35 40mm stem
Raceface Next R 35 20mm riser bars (800mm width)
DMR Death Grips (Gum colour)
Raceface Aeffect dropper post with lever
SDG Radar MTN Cro-Mo black/gold saddle (still to be fitted)
Xpedo Spry magenusium flat pedals (or latest gen' XT trails depending on where I am riding)
Fabric side-access bottle cage
76 Projects 3d-printed top-tube Enduro Mount for my Garmin (not yet fitted)

The new shock should go on in a few weeks once it is back from TFTuned and the saddle will go on as soon as it arrives.

The only debate now relates to tyres... I have a pair of Maxxis Ardents enroute in 2.4" and 2.25" guise. These should be a little more 'South Coast' friendly than the burly DHF/DHR combo. I have ordered them in skinwall to lift the bike a bit. Still not 100% sure though... I have just test-fitted the wheels from my new Niner Air-9 build which are Maxxis Ikon 2.2's (so very weedy)... what do you think?

Campfreddie, that is lovely. For me I like the DHR/F combo but I am in the North East of Scotland where, frankly, we don't get a summer. Burly tyre all year round!

13.5kgs using a very inaccurate set of bathroom scales. If that is true, then it is squeaking just under the 30lbs mark complete with the rather heavy DHR/DHF combo.

I reckon that with a bit (lot) more money chucked at it, it would be possible to trim another half a kilo or so from that (lighter tyres, XX1 groupset, lighter discs, lighter dropper post, lighter wheels and so on...), but then you start missing the point of it all. I don't mind chasing the grammes on my BMC Teammachine road bike as you do feel it, especially on the hills.

In any respect, a big chunk lighter than my Canyon Strive CF 7.0 which comes in nearly 2kgs heavier (and feels it).

Should certainly do the job for the UK stuff. No plans to ride it in the middle of winter as no plans to be in the UK (hence the Canyon Strive which lives in my winter home).

Roll on tomorrow for my first ride in the UK for a couple of years.... Never ridden at Peaselake before... I hope I don't get a flying Brendon land on my head.

I liked mine - apart form the black and off yellow colour. First time ever I got rid of a bike because it looked terrible to me in the daytime. I got on far better with it at night. But it was really fun. I still keep an eye out for a used one in black at reasonable money.

Nothing is standard anymore apart from the cranks.
140mm Dvo sapphires.
Cane creek shock.
Halo wheels.
Oneup dropper.
Saint brakes.
Great all round bike, a little heavy but you get used to it.
