I'll always regret giving away my spangly purple 1990 Trek 950 frame instead of sending it of to a frame builder to have the canti tabs removed and disc mounts added, before rebuilding it retro/modern street style ☹️ let's see what some of you have done...

This should be good. Nothing to add but I have seen some really good conversions of old / retro mtbs in to fix / single speed / 1x street urban machines. Some moved to 700c wheels others still on 26"

Watching with interest. I've got a surly 1x1 and pace rc31 rigid forks to build into something.

Built this a few years back, does this count as a retromod?

Path Racer style, 69er, SS, belt drive (Magic Ratio, no adjustment), drumbrake front. NOS Barracuda Kia frame.

I owned this for a few years and sold it for a dedicated singlespeed frame which wasn't anywhere near as nice to ride. Shouldn't have sold it. Gil M had the conversion work done and i bought it off him

Magic ratio 34:16 which was fine living at the coast, less so when i moved inland!

EDIT: In that photo i think its running a tensioner so 32:16

D'oh, missed that! Very nice anyway. I built a singlespeed up recently with 32:16 and my legs ain't strong enough for that, so 34:16 sounds way too hard. I am in Sheffield though so very hilly.

An old Serotta T-max, early 90s, fillet brazed, and SS'ed using my own eccentric bottom bracket, designed and built before Trickstuff came out with theirs.

Sorry, I was trying to get this bb code from flickr working. I've searched the help and followed the STW info but no luck.

Does anyone know if I copy and paste the whole bb code or part of it?

Not as retro as some here, but a gen 1 Cotic Soda reimagined as a gravel bike.

Looks like I will have to scan ebay to find an old Trek to replace mine & work on retromodding, the version with the Tange big fork should be pretty good for disc conversion I recon. Tempted by that Explosifs raw look too 🤔 thanks.

Cracking thread and very bad timing in many ways!

As I sold my gravel bike yesterday as it was a bit too good and I wasn't using my modern hardtail enough (obviously a good reason to sell it)...

And then I spot this glorious thread...and the budget gravel bike thread...get all excited about steel frames that i can weld mounts on..

...head to ebay...

...procure what i think is a 1999 genesis triple butted vanadium steel Gary Fisher Aquila (same as the hoo koo e koo frame) monstrosity to try and build into a usable bike of some sorts!

God help me

🙂
