tetsujin, did you have any issues with setting you Boardman up to run the 1x9?

I'm thinking of doing the same with my HT Pro.

no just bough a new chain, shortedned it to length and tada! Done.

Rides great.

As I said though, I am breaking the bike and have the chain (its a KMC gold x9 - nice chaine much better that the standard HG73 and a Pauls chain device (new in packet unopened) that I would sell if interested. Would make your 1x9 set up easy.

Email in profile if interested 🙂

Nice bike tetsujin - out of interest what upgrades do you have on it?

I changed my HT pro into a 1 x9 and it works fine. I use a bashguard on the outside and part of an old light bracket on the inside to keep the chain in place. I might swap those for one of the superstar seat tube mounted guides at some point just to save a little more weight.

Tetsujin it looks like your not using any form of chain device, just a shortened chain. Have you fitted an unramped ring?

I changed the wheels top hope pro hubs and manic 717 rims along with the panaracer xc pro tyres.

Also changed the brakes to formula rx with 180mm rotors f/r.

Put in a shimano slx chainset and new kmc x9 gold chain. Oh and a different seat.

And with regards to the chain device that photo was taken just when I did the 1x9 set up and was awaiting a Paul's chain device from the USA.

If anyone is interested I could sell the bike complete?

Patriotpro - at the risk of getting it wrong, that looks like a Muck Nutz Fender Bender. I have one, excellent for keeping crud out of your eyes and of your forks.

If your going to run it 1x9 or 1x10, you'll more than likely need a chain device. Its likely to come off on bumpy stuff. The superstarcomponents one works well enough, but get the bb mounted one as the seat tube mounted one is a bit fragile.

Anyone with the 2011 HT Comp on here? I want to protect the underside of the down tube from damage but as all the cables run under this on the bike you can't fit a crud catcher to add some protection from stone chips etc. Any ideas how I could protect the down tube?

PS. I resorted to a Bender Fender for catching mud

Nickswolves - helicopter tape would do the job. You can get it in quite wide.sections from eBay.

Thanks for your time from Ozzie

Hi Ozzie, thanks for your post. Ok, so I've owned the Comp for 4 months now and ridden it a good number of miles. Here's what I like/dislike;

Like
- Decent 120mm air fork which soaks up the technical stuff well with lockout and rebound adjustment
- Fairly lightweight for its price tag
- SRAM X5 groupset is smooth and does its job well
- Avid Elixir brakes provide decent stopping power (also see dislikes)
- Decent frame and finishing kit (Ritchey I believe?)
- Wide bar, short stem works well and provides good handling
- Fizik Gobi styled Boardman own saddle is v comfy
- Looks awesome IMO - gets lots of positive reaction from fellow riders

Dislikes
- Pedals are crap but then aren't most stock pedals
- Resin disc pads die quickly, replaced mine with sintered pads
- Avid brakes feel quite spongey compared to some brakes (especially my last Deores)
- Cable rubs around the fork crown badly - fit some Lizard Skin patches before you ride it (I found out the hard way)

Overall I've had no regrets buying this bike and rate it highly for the XC riding I do. It's capable of doing the technical stuff well and rides quick due to its lightweight feel. Would I recommend it? Hell yeah, for the money I think it's hard to beat!

Mine (mudguard only for wet rides!). Upgrades include Hope seatpost clamp, Spoon saddle, lock-on grips, SS Nano pedals (brilliant!), fatter, gnarlier tyres, muckynutz mini mudguard up front, new pop-up stem, various gold blingy bits and that's about it I think.

Epicsteve - are those slicks? 😯

Assuming that isn't just a photo of your road bike propped up in your garden this winter, that is a very good effort indeed. 😀

Here's mine. 2010 Version in small, made a bit more trail friendly. Went for the comp rather than pro as it had a stronger frame, plus I'm not keen on white bikes.
* Ritchey hi-rise stem 60mm
* Fatboy Funn bars cut to 720mm, Odi Yeti grips, Clarks full gear cable outers in white/silver
* Specialized Avator BG gel saddle
* Gravity dropper
* Hope QR seat clamp
* Shimano MT15 Rims, WTB Velociraptors, Mavic C-lock/ six bolt adaptors
* Wellgo B54 pedals (I sometimes run clipless also)
* Drivetrain: Outer ring swapped for BBG bashguard, middle ring swapped for Shimano 36T, N-gear jump stop on the inside (hence front mech is a bit high). Works well, I've not dropped a chain since and I know my trousers, legs and middle ring all protected by the bash.

It's a great bike. Thinking of 120mm fork, but that's just a thought right now...
Oh, and I used Bike Shield for protection. It's a bit pricey, but it's self-healing and quality stuff.

nah, it's pretty standard. awesome to ride - the carbon gives it a really supple feel. you'd never know it didn't have suspension to be honest. really flies on the downhills, feels really aero. 🙂
