my van blew its turbo last week and as i live in the sticks had to drag out my ancient last used years ago as a commuter orange P7 (slicks, panniers, mary bars) to do shop runs get to clubs etc.
its as hilly as round here but the low gearing makes road climbs super easy and what great fun to ride just to get around in a slow groove, what have i been missing being so van dependent!
so now i'm wondering what i can build up on the cheap from used bits that will be equally practical (in terms of load carrying), comfortable to ride (low gearing) and non-flash (i don't want it nicked, which is why i pulled out the P7 to leave chained up outside the shops and not any of my MTB or roadies).
anyone have any suggestions or bikes to show me for inspiration/ideas?
build an xtracycle like mine... massively increase your carrying capacity (child seat optional!)

Dave
I use a Charge skinny Duster for this, with cast offs from other bikes to adorne it.. this has unfortunately led to it increasing spec over the years, but none of it looks flash, more shagged to be honest.
Point being it's a cheap ish modern frame that performs brilliantly - it stood in for my main last year whilst building bits across, and I didn't really feel that badly off (other than front shocks, rigid is great but was definitely slower for me on proper tracks)
