following on from the thread the other day about shadowboards/toolwalls it transpired a fair few of us have toolboxes/chests in leiu of wall mounted kit

ive just got mine back to my house after storing it at my parents and its a mess. Trying to establish some order instead of it just being crammed in there - possibly being anal but having spent 10 years as a cycle mechanic in a previous life with my own set of tools i know how much easier life is with a well organised set up!

show me yours.

[img] [/img]

is mine for the interior pictures - imagine someone took all your tools , threw them up in the air and they landed in the drawers of that chest ! - except for the metric spanner drawer - thats organised to the n`th degree as a token starter effort into organising it !

(the green folder on the floor is the instructions for assembling the car - I finished that about 20yr ago and I've moved house 4 times since. Can't quite explain why it's on the floor)

I'm a big fan of tool chests over peg boards.

Having restored and worked on cars and tractors with Metric, Imperial and Whitworth tools, organisation is key. I have a selection on SnapOn tool chests and a big trolley with side mounted Mac chests. I can pretty much put my hand on anything from a stud remover to a pair of hose clip pliers without thinking.

have not attacked the bike tools yet - they are a little more aukward to do neatly ! - that and i have alot of new tools on the way from rosebike after i binned quite a few "just" working with the correct technique but pretty shagged out not working as they should tools

I like the magnet strips in the drawer. How are they held in?

they are self adhesive - not hugely powerful but enough to stop them moving when the tool box is opened and even tipped !

id have liked to have stuck them under the drawer liners directly to the metal but they were not powerfull enough to work through the liner 🙁

the laser reader motor in my midi hifi unit i inherited off the parents for the garage is dead - there is no input for mp3 player - it has the joys of a tape deck or radio ... the garage/shed is/was the only place i listened to CDs

SO ebay - buy it now , 25 mile radius of the house..... found this

[img] [/img]

60 quid for the AV amp and the CD player the dial isnt even at a quarter and its too loud for the garage 😀

Trailrat - could you sleep knowing a spanner was out of place? 😉

depends if by out of place you mean "under my pillow" if so then i couldnt ......

but im not "that" anal - i fully expect that in 6 months time it will look nothing like that but id like to start with it tidy , will perhaps inspire me to keep it like that - much easier to see when a socket or a spanner is missing.

Sorry to rock the boat, but your hinged ratchet spanners are all higgldypiggidy! They are randomly rightside and upside down...all the open ends are pointing in different directions. tut tut...

the imperials are like that too - but thats so they fit.

I am definitely with Scaredeypants in workshop organisation. Despite a massive clearup last year (and miraculously being able to find tools again), it has reverted naturally to its usual state. And yes, I can find nothing again!

Trail_Rat. I wish I could get my toolbox laid out tidy like that. I ticks my OCD box. Mine's just too full of tools to be that tidy. Reason No. 1 for a bigger box. And a bigger shed to fit it all in.

Yeah, I can see Thyne Wife aggreeing to that! 😥

bigblackshed

mines also too full for it .... thats the tidy drawers.

previously i only had the black chest .... next month i may invest in the middle part(another 4 drawers) as like you im finding that tidy tools take up alot more room !

ive systematically been going through them and keeping the commonly used tools and the good quality tools

the rest that are working have been slung in an old argos tool chest for the time being the ones that are in rough shape have been binned - but replacements have been bought as they were mostly essential bike tools ! chain tool , crank extractor , pedal spanner etc etc - it was time for a cull !

Just noticed on another thread some of the stuff you ahve ordered, if you need a shot of a wheel truing stand i have one you can have a loan of in Aberdeen.

My shed is not as organised as your garage but is better than some that have been posted.

cheers for the offer rusty but its high time i got my own - i do a fair bit of wheel building for me and mates - some of my old customers still throw wheels my way for rebuilds now and again - can still build a mean wheel using a frame / fork but decided it was just time to have a jig !

fair enough offer still stands if you ever do need it. May call on your expert knowlage, seem to be struggling with tensioning the wheels properly at the moment and have another 4 to build in the near future.

no worries any time

they aint stans are they ? i hate stans "you cant tension them as high as you like because we have made them light" - so you need to spoke freeeze or linseed oil them.

No mavic rims just now with the intention of getting some stans flows for the last pair to be built, have a park tensionomiter on order from the states as it was half the price of over here so i'll see how i go once i get that.

[edit]and to get back on topic by tool box currently concists of an old bathroom cabinet in the shed and B&Q box in the flat [/edit]

My main tool box...

[IMG] [/IMG]

All neat and tidy...

[IMG] [/IMG]

Tapping sticks...

[IMG] [/IMG]

The well organised spanner drawer...

[IMG] [/IMG]

If I had my spanners all laid out nicely it would require a much bigger tool chest and I need it to be fairly portable as I take it along with various sockets sets when I'm spannering at race events (off road racing land rovers and such like, not MTB). Bike specific tools are kept seperate in a small plastic box.
