Should I have got a Shimano Hyperglide chain instead of KMC?

Just fitted a Deore 11sp 11-51 CS-M5100 Cassette to my SRAM Rival gravel bike. It shifts OK on a quick test ride with the occasional slight “clonk” which isn’t a problem but back pedalling in the 11T sprocket causes it to skip / jump. It’s getting caught up on the same tooth every rotation.

I went for a KMC X11 chain as I thought I might need all 118 links but actually 116 is the right length so I could use a Shimano chain. Is it likely to make any difference?

Hopefully video here of what I mean.

And I think on this one you can see where it picks up on the tooth, it looks slightly fatter than the others

I’m probably just being fussy but it’s taken the edge of what’s supposed to be a nice upgrade.

How is it when pedalling forwards? Backwards pedalling isn't something we do is it? I think the edge that is catching like you show on the second video is caused by the chainline not the chain link type. Due to the extreme angle of is going across when in that final gear. I would keep to pedalling it forwards and I assume the link pin is locked in fully. That causes a similar jump but I see on the last video it points to chainline being the cause I think?

As you've not went for a hyperglide chain, you've lost the hyperglide features of the cassette such as the ability to shift under load.

Not saying that this is the cause of the issue, it could be down to something like chainline. Going forawrd, it tends to be good practice to match your chain to your cassette regardless of brand so I would go with a shimano chain next time.

I wouldn't worry about it back pedalling - if it's running fine when pedalling it's OK. Chain line can cause chains to shift off sprockets when back pedalling, espeially with multiple chain rings.

Should be fine on 11 speed. It's only really the 12 speed with the HG+ that makes a difference. And even then, I don't notice any real difference between a kmcx12 and an XT chain.

I reckon it's a chainline thing here.. the combination of narrower chainline on the cranks with the MTB cassette just causes it to catch slightly. You'd probably find a Shimano chain does the same. Try a SRAM chain maybe? They can run differently sometimes.

But if it doesn't do anything pedalling forwards. Just ignore.

Thanks all, if it’s not going to make much difference I’ll leave it as it is I guess.

Yes it pedals forwards fine and shifts nicely. I think you’re all right about the chain line causing it. Quick link is done up properly, the jump is definitely just it catching on that one tooth.

I’ll try a Shimano chain next time, I did try the original SRAM chain (which is now too short) and it did the same but maybe not quite as badly.

Ratio Technology Long cage. Fits a SRAM 11 speed mech (maybe 10 too?) and works with upto 52T cassettes.

They also do bits to convert MTB mechs to work with road / gravel shifters and to convert shifters to 12 speed.

Ran kmc chains for years on shimano drivetrains no issues. I never backpedal though 😉

Top jockey looks quite a distance from the sprocket in that picture. Is the cage clashing with it trimmed closer? If not I'd try to adjust the B screw and bring it a bit closer.

That pic was actually before I’d shortened the chain and adjusted B screw, it’s better now and is a bit closer 👍
