Looking at the price difference between 1x11 (Shimano 42t) and a OneUp expander to go 1x10 (42t) it's about £100

Any point going 1x10 and saving £100?

I could probably do with a new cassette and chain soon anyway

the 42t on my race bike needed the One Up cage for the XT mech and runs really well.

I think the cheapest 1x11 XT kit I've seen was around £150. That seems like an awfully good deal.

Or consider those wide range cassettes. Praxxis make one 11-40 10 speed. Shifting is better than an extender in my experience. Plus no gaps in ratios due to removing one either.
