You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I have a very early Shand (v light, 26" and to my geo design, slack seat tube by today's standards) and an 07 Big Kahuna 29er a size too small to run with drop bars (has worked well) and it can take B+. Both frames are 1.7kg ISH and build up lightish.
Having seen geometry develop I'm curious about trying something new...am I really going to see a benefit? The thought and cost of new hub standard(s) annoys me (my 05 Revs are fine!)
I'm not even riding much just now, but it's fairly "trail"/cc.
Your thoughts please? On a tangent I am thinking of pulling the trigger on a sh Scale on eBay in 6 hrs which could be a fun experiment.
I haven't read your post but the answer to that question is always yes. Unless your children are starving, obvs.
Demo time. Demo time!
Go ride one.
I didn’t understand any of those numbers and abbreviations you used but yes, always, get a new bike.
I recently bought a Cotic flare max. It fits better and goes faster, both up and down, than the bike it replaced. So I would say go to a demo day as well!
Things to consider:
I am deeply cynical about new bikes being better and marketing BS in general. Not to say they aren't, but I am suspect. I like all my 8 and 9 speed kit and am equally cynical about 10-11 and £100 40+T cassettes
I am trying to buy less shit, as an eco lifestyle choice, bikes are kind of exempt, but I have 7 just now.
I am the tightest man in Scotland, according to Danny.
Could I demo at say Glentress? Could be the easiest answer.
If you want to try something more up to date you can have a go on my Bird Zero 29.
Cheers Steven, might you make the Tuesday night ride ever?

I'm not sure they are ever that much better and sometimes new stuff is worse, but it is always different and sometimes that is what is needed to get riding again if you are struggling. For example I'm fairly certain that SS isn't the ultimate in cycling but it's my favourite bike at the moment as it changes all the rides and that's what I need to get my bum out of the door
Yes
(can someone summarise what he said, didn't read it)
Tuesday nights are not good for me, Thursday is the only night I can really get out depending on family commitments but I'm happy for you to borrow it for a day.
I had and loved my genesis io. Set up with 100mm fork it rocked on single track I’ll never sell this I thought. Was long slack curious a couple of years ago and picked up a 2016 pinnacle iroko. After riding it the genesis was promptly moved on !!

I've had quite a few bikes over the years and I can't ever recall a newer one being worse than the one it superceded. I've still got most of my old mtbs, including an early 90s Merlin titanium, and everything about them, except for weight, and perhaps on road ability, is worse than my current bike.

Buy a new one.

Get rid of one then, whichever you ride the least and don't enjoy when you do.

...and you ask if you should get a new bike, lol. Sounds more like you should get rid of some bikes to me.
I have a Bird Zero29 frame and some Hope 29 wheels for sale in tha classifieds if you’re interested.
Sell an old not used very much one first (to make room)
Yes, is the answer.
As for being cynical about new geometry being better, I rode my old bike after months of riding my new bike. It felt fine while seated, but out the saddle it felt positively dangerous, as if I were riding a road bike in the woods.
Damn, now I want another new bike.
I might not be in the same league for tightness, but I don't change bikes very often.
Have probably only had around 10 tops in all my biking days.
Had my M2 for 20 years. Still got an old Kilaeua that I got s/h but have had for more than 10 years. 2/3 years ago, got a new 29r/650b+ bike. Never looked back. Spot on for fit, comfort, did wonders for my riding - much more confidence.
I think new -ish - for that bike - geometry was very good. Not sure how it compares on the LLS trend.
How many guitars have you got?
Buy one of those instead. 🙂
Tried a Stache (19.5, I am a leggy 6'). Liked it but will build up my Big Kahuna B+ with wide bars as a better comparison.
