Sooo.... been out on the bike a lot more, to get fit and back in to biking. Round the local park with the wife and this weekend the Surrey Hills.

I've ordered a Bird Zero 29, but it's awaiting parts.

I've been offered a Cotic BFe (27.5) frame in my size (S) with axels, headset and seat clamp for £400.

I'm only just back in to bikes, but I have always loved a good steel frame and was thinking of getting it with a view to building it slowly to have a 27.5, maybe for the wife (really me).

Am I just being stupid? Should I just get the Zero and wait and see?

N+1
Do what makes you happy - as long as there's enough variation in the ride experience, which there will be in terms of geo, wheel size and frame material between the two bikes.
Plus it's good to have two in case one needs a repair.
Plus, Plus Cotic HT's are pretty fun.

I'd sort of go the other way on this 🙂

To me the Bird and the Cotic geometry is relatively similar, aside from the BB drop (the Bird is a lot lower). They're both pretty rad trail hardtails. If it were me I think I'd basically end up preferring either one or the other, and then riding it most of the time.

I do get the argument for having a "spare" bike to make it less of a pain if one breaks, but I'd sooner have a more markedly different bike.

That said, N+1 is a thing, and if you fancy it, why not?

I'm just wondering whether I'll end up buying it for the sake of it..

I do get what you mean about them being very similar bikes.

Hmmm.. food for thought.

That said, I could probably shift the frame again if I didn't use it...

Great bikes, bit doesn't sound like a great price.

How old is it?

I don’t think I would.

Firstly that doesn’t sound that cheap.

Secondly it’s in a Similar sort of vein to the zero29er so not that different.

Thirdly it’s probably a heavier frame than the Zero.

Fourthly unless it’s changed it’s not even made of the nice steel that the Cotic Soul is made of for full benefit of the steel ‘feel’.

I think it’s a nice problem/choice to have. BFe vs Zero - it’s hard to see how you can lose.

Thanks all! I didn’t know that the price wasn’t great.

I think I’ll keep an eye out for an older Soul or SolarisMax for an XC build

BFe stands for burly iron, or in other words, it's as strong as ****, but it ain't a classic steel framed ride.....
& yeah I've got one, it's a hoot but stiff !
