As per my boost thread, im building a new boost frame FS 29.

I have one of the SLX chainsets from the Evans PSA, so i need to order a chainring. These chainrings for direct mount are all 12sp compatable.

Im a massive hoarder and have a load of new 10 and 11 sp stuff to use. So i have an 11sp HT and an 11sp 2x gravel bike. The other mtbs are all 10 speed, which i like.

So, in the 10sp new spares corner i have, SLX 675 long cage mech, SLX 670 10sp shifter, 10sp KMC chain, Deore 11-42 10sp cassette, sunrace csmx3 11-40 10sp cassette. So i can make up a 10 sp drive train there... i also have 2 or 3 new 11-36 XT cassettes and some 40T expander sprockets.

In the 11sp corner i have a couple of SLX M7000 shifters, XT M8000 sgs rear mech, XT M8000 shifter, SLX 11-40 11sp cassette.

So, what should i build with, or do I need something else to make it all sweeter?

Ian

I've "standardised" on 11 speed Shimano across all my bikes (road, gradventourer, hardtail, fat and full-sus) except the SS. It just makes things like brake pads, chains, cassettes easier to deal with when they are all similar - i.e. I need less "stock".

Personally I’d be less worried about number of speeds and more about the range.

I used to ride quite happily on a 30t chainring and 10-42 11 speed cassette until I went 12 speed on one bike. The 11 speed gx probably shifted better than 12 speed but then I missed the wider 10-51 range. So now both bikes are 12 speed with big cassettes.

11 speed can probably do 11-46 with a Shimano or Sunrace cassette so I’d probably do that. If the mech won’t stretch that far and you’re happy with the cassette ranges you have then just use the stuff in best condition. Just remember 29er wheels make each gear relatively harder to push than 27.5” wheels. On my recent new 29er frame I’ve gone 30t x 10-51 rather than use the existing 32t chainring.
