My cassette was too big, so a mate gifted me a Shimano 11-28 and and 11-32. I'm running a SRAM x7 10sp mech and shifter.
It works fine using the MTB sunrace cassette but the big cog is too big, along with not being needed.
When I fit the 11-32 I seem to only get 9 gears, I can either miss top or bottom cog.
With the sunrace I get all 10
Thoughts?
Should work I think, but check by offering the sunrace and 11-32 up to each other (easiest if you offer the biggest sprocket to littlest). If they match it’s not the cassette.
Have you adjusted the H/L/B screws for the new cassette? The spacing between the sprockets should be the same but the relative position of the whole cassette may be slightly different...
That should be ok if you can persuade it to give either the 9 highest or the 9 lowest but not 10.
Try indexing by getting gear 5 or 6 perfect. That means you take half the total error in each direction, whereas if you get either end perfect you get the maximum error at the other end.
I am assuming of course that the mech hanger etc are straight and the cable is in exactly the right place on the mech’s pinch bolt.
Bike is brand new and never been outside.
L and H screws allow more than required.
B screw helps one way or the other, but not both ends.
Not measured against eachother but will do tomorrow
My routine on a new frame is:
- Slacken cable or disconnect cable
- Set high gear limit screw
- Push derailleur across by hand and set low gear limit.
- Set B screw if it really needs it - yes it makes things better but if your chain length is right I find it is a marginal improvement - still an improvement, just does it need it versus faff.
- Nring gear cable into play and index from the middle of the cassette in both directions - indexing from one end used to cause endless faffing.
Works for me. Others will have their own methods.
