Do many people use the shorty as a rear tyre. Would I be better off with a HR 2? I ride a variety of terrain in the peaks, Hebden, Macclesfield and the Golfie when I get the chance - so that's basically stones and loam. Is the Shorty quite draggy on the rear?
Thanks in advance
I've got the 2.3 on the back at the moment, with a 2.5 on the front. It's really not that draggy and is great in the mud, roots and dirt here during the winter months. However, in the conditions you describe I'd rather run my default rear tyre which is a DHR2 2.3 Dual (not 3C) - more volume, more width, rolls faster, grips better in all bar mud and wet roots.
I think the HR2 2.3 is redundant since the DHR2 came along, as it rolls slower, brakes worse and corners no better (and often worse) though the far toothier HR2 2.4 is a great front tyre.
I had one on the rear two years ago, 2.3 . was really good although not the greatest on slick rock, but it was at least predictable
WTB Vigilante tough high grip on the rear. It's only ever draggy on tarmac, but I don't buy tyres for tarmac.
Paired with a vertstar supergravity Mary, wicked combo for everything bar hard pack trail centre type surface.
HR2 is gash, so remove that from the equation.
DHR2, Hans Dampf TS, Dhf, vigilante.
Pick one of those.
Shorty on the rear is a bit specific for me, great in really muddy claggy conditions, but too restrictive elsewhere.
HD can clog up, DHF is a tiny big draggy, vigilante is heavy, DHR2 is fast, grippy and light, but a little bit less grippy in a straight line.
Currently have Shortys front and rear on my Pitch they're great on loam and mud and roll reasonably well on hard pack.
It's draggier than I like on the back but very good grip on soft stuff. More than I really like most of the time! I prefer the DHR2 as a rear but no denying it has a lot less grip.

This.
One of my lads bought me a 3c Shorty for Xmas so I put it on a front wheel to replace the used one that'd been on since the summer ended. So I put it on to a rear as we were going to Golfie/Inners that weekend.
Kept it on as the only drawback seems to be on slippery roots, but for the rest of the trails (I live in the Tweed Valley) it gives plenty of security - especially on night rides (been out tonight) where there's more of a chance of not seeing stuff.
A second vote for a Shorty/DHRII combo. Had Shorty's f&r but found the rear too sketchy on roots, the DHRII is much better with very little loss of grip in deep mud.
I run shorty 2.3 front and rear for winter (mainly natural stuff in stirling area) and 2.4 hr front and rear for when its dryer. Shorty is for sure more draggy but is top in mud. As others have said it likes a slide in the mud...
not so great on slick roots and you get used to the slide
I use a MM (f) and Shorty (r) but thinking of switching back to the DHRII in the rear
I use a MM front and Shorty rear on muddy Hampshire trails and it's one of the few combinations that can elicit traction in the depths of winter. But in the Peaks and Lakes, I found that I was spinning out on most of the rocky climbs and the Shorty was all over the place over rocks on the descents. It also wore out incredibly quickly to the point where the chunky square lugs were soon rounded!
So for the Peaks and Lakes I switched to a 2.3 HR2 on the back. It's a big improvement although still not perfect. I actually got more climbing traction on rocks with an Ardent on the back but the HR2 offers more braking traction. The HR2 is quite draggy and it sounds like I ought to give the DHR2 a look.
MM front/ Shorty rear here
Ridiculous grip. 3C compound on the Shorty
Was running a DHR2 on the back but have switched to a Vigilante this winter.
Doesn't roll quite as well but seems to have a bit more bite in really loose stuff.
Thread ressurection i'm afraid.
Looking for a rear tyre for winter use when when it gets muddy around FoD trails. So steep, exposed roots and some rocky sections.
I have been using MM Vertstar/HD Trailstar for last couple of years but looking for something more winter specific.
I've just started using a Shorty WT MaxTerra up front but my Vigilante Tough/fast rolling on the rear will need changing soon. I'm happy with the Short up front and Am thinking Shorty 2.3 on the rear. I can see some have used the Shorty front/rear combo with some reservations on roots and rocks. Have you come across anything better for the rear?
Thanks
I'm using a der Baron Projekt 2.4 on the front and am thinking the same tyre on the rear might work - it's very slightly less of a specialist than the Shorty and maybe slightly better on rooty slippy stuff other than mud.
It I were running maxis at the moment I think Shorty 2.5 front (if i could find it for sale anywhere) with DHR on rear might be my choice.
It's all very subjective though depending on personal preference and riding location!
I got mine from ze germans. They still have some in stock.
goyawave - Shorty 29 x 2.5?
I'm not but both are sizes are available.
Has anyone gone from a shorty on the rear to something better in slop?
What site are you seeing them on?

Looks like you'll need to wait a few weeks though!
2.5 shorty front and der Baron projekt rear for me in the slop. Baron rolls better than the shorty but clears and cuts through well.
Just tried a Magic Mary front and rear although 2.6 addix on the front and 2.35 3C on the rear. Did Green Wing a few times and there was definitely plenty of grip but still rolling quickly. Testing further tomorrow on some steeper stuff.
