My current MTB shorts are Maddison Zenith that have a perfectly placed zipped pocket at the back for a phone. Most other shorts seem to have pockets on the thighs which is fine for things like a small snack but a phone there gets really annoying after a few hours of pedalling. A rear pocket just makes more sense and doesn't get in the way.
Hopefully some warmer weather is coming so I'm looking for another pair of shorts for warmer weather. The Zeniths are very comfy and fit my 28 inch waist but quite warm. I also had to cut about 10cm off the legs as they were too long.Â
Anyone know of any small shorts with a rear zipped phone pocket?

Lycra is your friend - 50 mile ride today in my Rapha cargo bibs and my phone has been locked tight to my thigh with no movement or discomfort
Rapha mtb shorts do this very well. Zip on a rear pocket that also contains a restraint inside to keep your phone from jiggling about. The lightweight version are a sensible cut as well.
double post
bib liner shorts with "cargo" storage in the small of the back are the best comprises if you don't want to wear a cycling jersey.

like the Rapha shorts have pockets on the back of your thigh rather than the front.Â
I wear cycling jerseys and use the back pockets for road/gravel. But for MTB I need a zip up pocket in a place where the phone bouncing around won't be annoying.Â
I have several sets of lycra bibs shorts with cargo pockets and pockets on the rear. But none of them are big enough to hold a phone really. And it would get really sweaty.
Currently using either Spatz or Castelli gravel cargo shorts.
Mostly i have tiny bum bag - just for my phone a car key which i sometimes use when wearing a loose top in summer.
I've got old Endura Humvees and some Decathlon (MT500?) shorts which both had/have pockets on the back of the legs which were great for phones. Not sure if eithers current version does though
The Endura ones were big enough to take an OS map (on a dry day anyway). And I end up wearing them for DIY and gardening as the pockets are perfect for carrying tools, screws, etc! You can even use it as a holster for a battery drill!

Another vote for Rapha Trews, baggies or cargo bibs. Even with a stupidly big samsung ultra phone you wouldnt know it was there.
Another vote for Rapha. Not really a "back" pocket, its more round the side/back of your thigh. But the phone is completely un-noticeable whilst riding and falls very naturally to hand when you want to pull it out.
I have a pair of Patagonia shorts ( can’t remember model, the cheapest) which have a phone pocket at the back of the leg. This is so unobtrusive that I feel for the phone 2-3 times per ride because I think it has fallen out.
Another vote for Rapha - I bought their trousers in a Sports Pursuit sale and I've been so blown away by the detailing and how well constructed they are that I've now got shorts, shirts and everything from them.Â
The shorts are brilliant - would definitely buy again.Â
