Hello!

Can anyone recommend some shorts that:
a. Taper in at the knee
b. Don't cost a small fortune (ideally max of £50)
c. Are in stock somewhere

Mostly riding my gravel bike and not ready for the full lycra only look at the moment but also sick of my usual MTB shorts flapping around at the knees when linking stuff with road sections.

Cheers!

You could try Endura Humvee. They're definitely MTB shorts but closer fitting than most.

Not the recent versions! Or at least the standard weight ones (Humvee II) are proper Enduro baggy like wearing a coal sack on each leg. The Humvee Lites are a better cut, but I wouldn't say they taper at the knee.

Dunno which mine are. They're heavy fabric but close fit on me and don't flap around. Can't say I've seen cycling shorts with a properly tapered fit.

Endura MTR are a 'sleek' baggy short. I wear mine on the road bike (and for jogging)

In stock is likely your issue.

I had some Troy Lee Ace shorts that fit your brief. They were nicely fitted and the material was like I was being fondled by angels. I had to trim the velcro waist closure (no button!?) to stop it rubbing my belly and the taped seams fell open after the first wash. Worth a look if you are delicate with your kit. Or maybe not. I think Wiggle still owe me a refund.
