I have a pair of Rapha Trail Fast & Light shorts ( https://tinyurl.com/bddw9fmm) which i like because they are not baggy, and the zip pockets are on the sides which means phone and keys etc. don't jiggle around when pedaling.

They are at the end of their life so I'm after a replacement. Unfortunately are expensive for what they are and not great quality (have had problems with poppers breaking etc), so does anyone have any reccomendations of something similar? Thanks.

Troy lee skyline.  Camo is softer material than black, c 50 quid direct from TL.  I pretty much live in them, zip pockets, decent fit, dry easily.

I've been commuting in some Madison shorts I bought of the back of a PSA on here.

Now discontinued by the look of it, but a no frills put of shorts with front and back pockets.

I quite like the 7 Mesh ones they have a good phone pocket as well.

Pretty breathable and good for leisure as well.

I buy in their.sales which seem to get more frequent now.

Farside ones good, not too baggy.

£45 in recent sale which is still on but  popilar sizes getting sold now.

For warmer weather, whatever lightweight airy generic sports shorts, that I can pick up cheap. The bright blue pair of UnderArmor shorts paired with a fluroescent yellow t-shirt is a striking look indeed!

Maybe the regular Trail Shorts? Rapha have a sale on at the moment, I've just ordered a pair of exactly that for commuting. I'm currently using some cut-down Rapha "casual riding" trousers which I lopped off at the knee to create some slim-fitting baggies. However they're starting to show their age now and I was after something more specifically aimed at riding rather than "urban casual".

I have the same Rapha shorts, and agree on disappointing longevity. The seat on mine is showing quite a bit of wear despite being not that old.

7mesh Farside (the ones now named 9 inch) are far better, but even more expensive (or less frequently discounted to the same extent as Rapha, at least)

  1. I wear Endura Humvee shorts when its warm and the 3/4 Humvee  trousers when it's not so warm. Plenty of pockets and have lasted well. I have a couple of liner shorts from Endura and On One which I wear underneath

Sport Pursuit still have the fast & light and normal trail shorts on offer (limited sizes now though). I also bought some of the Vulpine gravel shorts from there but they're much thicker material (not ridden in them yet either, was more for casual wear for me).
