is anyone riding their pitch with a shorter shock(i2i)?
i don't need 150mm out back, and i'm lumbered with some 130mm forks at the mo.
ok, pedal strike is already not great on the pitch, but by my simplistic reckoning, if i put in a 190mm i2i shock, instead of my 200mm, obviously with little enough travel to stop the frame bottoming out, it would give me more like 125mm out back, make the geo a bit slacker, and make the bike a bit more playfull.
anyone tried it?

also relates to this article i was reading:
http://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/4x-bikes-latest-trend-or-used-for-intended-purpose

i always like the look and compactness of FS 4x bikes, but by no means do i need a bike that tough/heavy. i also don't really want a bike with the geo of most shorter travel FSers; more aimed towards an XC feel.

takes me back to wiching ragley would make thos FS bikes, again...

Slight contradiction in that you don't 'need' 150 out back yet you're 'lumbered' with 130 up front? 😉

You'd need to check the stroke length on a replacement shock. Its probably 50mm stroke on your existing 200mm shock, so if you got a 190mm eye to eye shock with a 50mm stroke, you'd still have the same travel but probably mess up your bb height and geometry?

Why not just get a 150 fork for the front? A second hand Rev or Pike wouldn't cost much more than a new rear shock?

If its only temporary just run a bit more sag on the shock and save your money for some decent 140-160mm forks.
I certainly wouldn't start putting a shorter shock on it. Longer, yes, but not shorter!

Indeed. If you don't need 150mm, why buy a Pitch in the first place?

Slackset? I wouldn't be reducing the rear shock

Its 200x57 and not sure shorter would help.

You read that thread and still think what you are after has anything to do with 4X? 😯

Best way to go would be a service/tune and shaft shortened/limited on your current shock (depending what it is)
Or just buy a Camber

because it was the only frame that had a short enough headtube and not a fox triad shock and i could swap my bits straight onto. and it was dead cheap and i was on a budget. and i wanted to try it. and it's well good.

if i could afford new forks of course i'd put longer ones on and balance up the bike. aye i don't need 150 but i do appreciate it and enjoy having plenty of travel. but i already have a spare shorter shock that with some sort of stroke reducing and some mounts/bushes i could put on.

'well why don't you just try it then?' yes.

You'd need to check the stroke length on a replacement shock. Its probably 50mm stroke on your existing 200mm shock, so if you got a 190mm eye to eye shock with a 50mm stroke, you'd still have the same travel but probably mess up your bb height and geometry?

well aye. not to mention completely bottom out the frame! i thought i coverered that. it'd be shorter stroke so bottom out was in roughly the same place as other shock, travel-wise.

so non of you lot have tried it clearly?
running more sag be worth a try but that means things being more spongy and more likely to bottom out shock a bit too often

well no. just found myself agreeing with what a lot of folk were describing there; what they thought might be good.

aye agreed, if it worked well, but it'd be worth trying out with the wee spare shock i've got

I think you'd end up with about 135mm travel, but 10mm shorter eye to eye could drop the bottom bracket up it an inch, and its pretty low to start with, and as you say it would be slacker but it'd be a pig to pedal, a 200x50 would shorten the travel without changing the bb height though, loco or mojo could fit a travel reduction spacer to the 200x57 to shorten it,
But 130 forks would lower it again so longer forks would be best

The brace on the seat stays hits the frame if you get a 190mm x 57 shock.
