Just about to fit a pair of codes to my new build and after watching the Sram tech video it says to use their dot compatible grease and to torque the nut to 8nm.

I have a torque wrench but no 8mm crowfoot spanner, not any of the Sram grease. Is it necessary to use the grease and is 8nm vital or just the usual brake hose ‘nip up’?

I normally use a torque wrench for everything before the pitchforks are dusted down and brandished.

You could use a silicone-based grease instead. Failing that you'd likely be fine not applying grease to the olive but put something like anti-seize grease on the threads of the compression nut.  As for tightening the hose, I always keep going until the compression nut comes to a stop - a fraction of a turn each time and you'll know when it's tight enough.

And if you don't have one, purchase the specific Park tool spanner to do this next time > perfect!

Can get away with not using the grease. The sram stuff is just rebranded Red Rubber grease. Small tins available on eBay for cheap.

Had a few bikes to change over and bought a tin. Will last forever as you use very little. Fitting went in smoother than usual, but no magic difference. Would probably help in getting a correct torque figure which is difficult on dry threads. Never used a torque wrench either though, just did it up sensibly snug.

Yeah, I've never used grease on my SRAM or Avid brakes. Never once had a corrosion issue, they're protected under the wee rubber thing anyway.
