Short shorts

I need new baggies and I've got short legs. As every year goes by shorts seem to get longer. In some of them I look like a fat Tintin. That's not what I'm after.

Can anyone recommend some shorts that aren't overly long?

I'm not aiming to look like a 70s rugby player either, just need shorts that don't go over the knee on the short of leg. Old endura single-track were sort of OK, although even they are a shade long and I'd also like something with a bit more stretch, solid fastening and I couldn't give a hoot how many pockets they've got.

Hugs and kisses,

Luke

7mesh do the Farside short which is pretty short (they also do a long version of it)

Spendy, but my experience of 7mesh gear so far is that you'll still have them in 10 years

I have some Fox Flexair Lite shorts and they are a really nice slim fit and a really good length for my 5ft 8 frame! The ‘lite’ version usually seems to be on sale as opposed to the regular Flexair version, picked mine up for £60ish. The Chamois is actually pretty good too as a bonus!

I've a pair of Endura singletrack shorts (2 maybe) that are just ridiculously short.

I do in their defence have long thighs(worst humble brag)

I'm going to follow this post, i have daft short legs for my heightm 5'11" tall but only 28" legs! Great for a low centre of gravity when i played rugby, absolutely useless everywhere else.

I can buy 3/4 length bib tights though and they act as full length on me, which saves some money!

+1 I'm interested in this too. Very short legs
Road bike short leg tan line is bad enough, I couldn't even imagine a knee line tan!!

I'm roughly the same body shape as a gibbon (long body, short legs, knuckles that drag on the floor) and find Endura singletracks or humvees fit great and are thus my default. I've had loads of Endura shorts over the years

Clearly @sandwicheater loss is my gain and Endura designed their shorts with primitive, ape-like people in mind rather than those at the other end of the evolutionary scale

I am 5ft 11 with pretty standard dimensions.

I bought singletrack lites, in the shorter leg. still came to about the middle of the kneecap. i shortened them about an inch with some Wonderweb, which has held up pretty well.

I've got some Fox Ranger shorts that meet your Goldilocks requirement, not current season so don't know if currently ones do.
No good with knee pads though.

I’ve found that Showers Pass, Gore, Vaude and Cube all do on the short side shorts.

I've gone big on 7mesh, endura singletrack (short version, new looks very different to my many moons ago ones) and fox flexair. Sigma sports had all that lot. Some will go back but along the way I'll get the tape measure out.

But - £100 on a pair of shorts? That's a thing now? I mean, I guess I can take it if that's where we are but... 😬 🤯

Fresh goods 😉 obtained from a ‘special interest’ website I spend far too much time on. Am I going to be disciplined?

Long shorts for me.

The less of my skinny milk bottle white Scottish legs on view, the better for everyone.

I'm 5ft5 with short legs and find Endura Hummvee shorts in XS a good fit. Most others had to be cut down and re hemmed.

So it turns out googling "we wear short shorts gif" is less safe for work than looking at tractors.

i think you are shrinking. i struggle to get bike shorts that come to my knee. the last 2 pairs of shorts i`ve bought end up with a **** gap when i wear pads. i do have long legs though.

What size waist OP?

33" ish and relatively chunky of thigh and arse. Sexy as that sounds.

5'6", simian proportions. Long back. My shortness is highly concentrated into my thighs, weirdly.

Unfortunately, I'm not shrinking. My old Endura Singletrack shorts have shrunk though. Definitely. Their fault.

Anyhoo, got three of the above recommendations in the post, so will see how they go.

Thank you for reigniting my admiration of Daisy Duke. And for igniting some for singletrack's answer to her and the marvellous Mr Dangerholm up there. How did he ride a gravel bike up that mountain in those shoes?

A short shorts update...

Thanks for all the help, folks.

The 7mesh ones are unusually short for shorts nowadays and are good for me. I'd be happy if they were even a little longer. Anyway I'll keep them. They're more like tailored normal shorts than mountain bike baggies. Whether they'll be suitable for use with knee pads and a bit of crashing (££) I'm not sure.

The material on all three is very thin. Which is great in summer weather but not what I'm used to in spring/autumn. Hopefully robust but who knows. The Fox ones especially thin.

Endura singletrack wide waist with double popper I'd really like but they taper in at the waist too much for my beer habit. I think they come up smaller than the size guide says. Length is fine for me in the "short" version but longer than the other two, so their normal length ones would be like plus fours. I might try a size up.

Fox come with inserts, have a ratchet to do them up and no fly zip. And are exceptionally thin. They are kind of the right size but I think they're designed to be a really loose fit on someone smaller than me. I don't think I'll keep them.

I’ve just got some Fox Ranger Water shorts. Seems to be ripstip front, something a bit more waterproof on the rear. Come down to the knee cap (I’m 5’9 and 32” leg) and worked well on the first ride out last night. If I could change then I’d make them a tiny bit more generous in the seat but the 32” waist is bang on. I tried the 34” ones and they were enormous of waist and everywhere else. Best shorts I’ve found so far.

The Nukeproof ones I tried were a weird fit for me - but too long and bit too baggy in medium but small were too tight.

It’s a minefield!

Got the tape measure out.

Inseam in mm
7mesh 280
Fox flexair 320
Endura Singletrack lite 320

Turns out I'm fatter than I thought. Generally I take 33" trousers, sometimes 34 fall off me. but get an actual tape measure out and I get a rude awakening. 35". Makers of trousers are also makers of you feeling a bit better about yourself. Whodathunkit?

7mesh in medium are a perfect fit but aren't really mountain biking baggies, more just good shorts that also work on a bike. Endura I went up to a large and they're a bit big, like tighten the velcro to the max and then they're good. But elsewhere they're perfect for me. Good bagginess for riding but not over the top. Nice fit with pads. Really wide waist and means it can be a little loose and still stay put. Fox are sort of overly baggy I think. I've ended up with some 36s on the cheap, which are too big really but I think they could be useful when I've got lots of pads on, and they're a nice colour, and the ratchet thing has enough range that they stay on, so I'm keeping them.

My enduras are a bonkers lime green colour because I'm a cheapskate but I really like em. Also <£50.
