Has anyone done this successfully?

I’d like to put AXS on my hardtail to replace a short range 10 speed setup.

I don’t want a full size Eagle cassette so I’m wondering if Rival gravel bits will do the job.

It then looks like fitting an XDR driver to my wheel and going with a short cage Rival mech and one of the smaller cassettes.

Fundamentally this will rely on an mtb shifter working with eTap and finding the parts in stock I suppose.

Theres a nice SRAM Gravel range casette thats 10-45tooth I think, presumably that would work fine with the rest of the SRAM 12 speed MTB stuff, AXS or cables.

EDIT - scrap the above, the gravel cassette is 11 speed not 12!

Not sure how/if you can mix 11 speeds with an AXS shifter...

I agree with the sentiment though - I'm currently going 12speed and using the XT 'rythm step' cassette which has a similar smaller range. I dont feel Eagle range is needed on a lighter bike.

You could go everything SRAM AXS but Shimano Rhythm Step Casette and Chain

All the AXS stuff works with each other, even across road and MTB, so no issue there.

The XPLR cassettes are the reduced range 12 speed ones, without going full road gearing

Stock, on the other hand…

Yep, all the new AXS stuff is 12 speed so MTB shifter and road mech is fine. hardest bit will be finding an XDR driver to fit your wheel, if you want the XPLR cassette.

Or look at smaller cassettes, and/or using a bigger chainring.

Surely the benefit is that you can fit a bigger front chainring (for higher speed) yet still have the smallest ratio you need?

Yes, it’s the 12 speed XPLR cassettes I was looking at with will give the choice of 10-36 (I’ve got 11-36 fitted at the moment) or 10-42.

My wheels are Mavic Crossmax so I’m hoping there’ll be a compatible XDR driver available for a Mavic road wheel.

I don’t need the range of a 12 speed cassette but after using AXS on my other bike this year I think it’s ace to use.

The SRAM website says you can run their road AXS as 8,9 or 10 speed. Jo idea about the MTB stuff, I guess it would depend on if it’s compatible with the right chain. Surely from an electronic point of view they can just be programmed to shift with whatever spacing you have but they need to be physically compatible.
Could you fit a road mech?
