got some 5 ten sam hill shoes, which i love to bits, but after my foray in the lakes recently, which involved a fair bit of pushing and carrying, my ankles were shot. took me a week to get over the stiffness/tenderness.

i want some boot that are bit more rocky terrain friendly, but ok for riding in. 5 ten impact hi look ideal, but is there anything else suitable for my needs.

How about some 5 10 Line Kings. Kevin has had a pair for a few years. Needed to support his ankles due to dislocations from windsurfing. Abigale has just got back from a few days in New York with College so he ordered a pair of the taupe ones to be delivered to her hotel. £39 all in

Don't they still come in wide fit too? You could just leave the blanking plate covering the SPD holes or is it they are too stiff? I'm currently using Lake 303s and they are very very comfortable and come in wide fit with vibram sole but it's patterned for SPD. Hold the ankles really well too. If you are flat pedalling and hike a biking why not just wear some flexible ankles decent walking boots? I have some Oakley Tactical boots which I could easily pedal in have grippy gum rubber soles and also come well up to lower shin to stabilise my floppy ankles.

Recently got some Sombrio Shazams, all leather, very well stitched, solidly built with ankle, support which is what I needed for the same reason. Soles stiff enough for intended bike use and seem fine off the bike too. Really impressed except think should've gone for the next size up, hope they stretch soon as get pins and needles after an hour grrr.

ton, what happened to your ankles ? Did you sprain them, bang 'em on rocks or what ?
I don't see that "support" would help otherwise

Yep. Either this or some good ankle supports inside your normal choice of footwear.

However, Ton, keep an eye on the ankles. If they're taking that long to recover, it may not be the fault of the shoes. So, again, good ankle supports and/or a physio/sciency check up might be worth a look.

You're only as old as the man you feel, Ton!

How old is he, by the way? 😉

As flash says, then, a decent support inside the shoe ought to be better than relying on a boot

I'd have thought a boot'd just rub if it was tight enough to give proper support

I'm guessing that ankle brace is to stop them spraining rather than supporting in general terms, ton

moderate compression is the most I'd want to keep my ankles "supported" just to stop them aching - if it wasn't that my ankle ligaments are ****ed and mine turn right over really easily (I stopped playing footy when I had to tape both ankles up so they couldn't move before I started).

I occasionally wear some 661 things like those physioroom efforts when I think I might sprain one - say when I went to the alps - but they're pretty annoying/painful to wear for a day, esp if you're going to do some walking

I've got two pairs now. Nice grippy reasonably stiff sole (stiffer than Shimano am40's, or whatever the flat pedal shoe they offer is called.), enough ankle support without being super bulky and heavy, and they last forever. Can be found cheap online too. They do size up a little small though, but available in half sizes so maybe go up a fraction if you buy before trying. Oh, and a lace guard which doubles as a bit of a water deterrent.

Ton. Use the old fell runners trick of taping a piece of strapping tape (the woven stuff climbers use) on the outside of the leg from a few inches above the ankle bone down to the instep. Offers ski boot like support to the ankle and weighs next to nothing. Hint: Shave the area before applying as comfier to remove tape afterwards.

I've got a pair of 5-10 insight mid heights I use for that kind of stuff, i'm in spuds normally but wanted something for rocky lakes hike a bikes etc when the disco slippers are a pain to walk in. Impacts look a bit better as bike specific?

I'm not a massive fan of riding in them as they're a bit gompy and cumbersome but work on the way up.

Seems to me that ankle support via straps/custom device would be superior in use and less restrictive with shoe choice.

If OP chooses that route though, i would do it in consultation with a specialist/physio though as I believe it may weaken/destabilise your ankle joint/s further over time if relying too much on support?

Something with 'mid' in the title.

If you want to splurge, I believe that the North face make some fancy gore tex lined mid cut boots.

Or you could try hi-tecs v-lite sphyke with a vibram sole in black and orange...slight lumberjack vibe tho.

Sports direct might turn up some mid cut karrimor boots for much value. 😮
