looking for a new shoe/pedal combo.
cant, for the **** of me, get my gammy foot comfy on the bike.
flats, my foot moves about and jumps off the pedal offroad
spd's, the shoes are far far too narrow and tight
keen targhee shoes do fit but cant find anything similar in a spd.
and it is doing my ****ing swede in.
Clips/straps?
Why not use old-skool toe straps? Choose the shoes/boots of your choice and off you go.
doh......never thought of that.
not seen any in years.
i will have a look
Five tens and nukeproof neutron for me for all bikes and conditions.

I've never tried them, but Power Grips seem to be pretty good.
5:10s and burgtec for flats.
Specialized and shimano for clips.
Toe clips are hateful, borderline dangerous things.
Adidas terrains and nuke proof horizon on all my bikes (AM/gravel/XC)
They ♠️
Adidas terrex with burgtec and vault dmr, avoid the v12 grip unreal on both
And shimano and shimano m540s when clipped
I assume that your gammy ankle affects how well you can grip the pedal with your shoes Tony?
Shesh 2FO spd shoes. Not narrow.
Time pedals and plenty of float, Shimano shoes, one size bigger than usual or 2 for winter boots which will wear seal skins under.
Or flats with Skate trainers/ boots
try Lake ExtraWide https://lakecycling.com/collections/extra-wide
they only do a couple of models but a mate had a similar problem getting a wide shoe that actually was on a wider last (not just a wider body on a standard last) and the lakes are his go to shoe now.
Foot position on the pedal is why your foot comes away from the pedal.

having a foot that don't bend, and that has limited feeling is why my foot comes off the pedal.
I'd suggest Nukeproof Horizon pedals, do the pins the same as Sam Hill does (remove inside pins, set all others to max height to increase concavity and grip), then couple with a set of 5:10 Impacts (the bigger ones) as their bigger, thicker sole should grant you more leeway for the less flexible foot.
Burgtec mk4 and whatever shoe is handy. I only wear my fifteen impact vxi with them if I'm going out for long and in wet, if it's dry, or I'm only going up the local jump spot, I'll chuck on a pair of my many running shoes (only get 3-500 miles from them, then they're resigned to non running duties), so there's always a few pairs lying around.
I also have burgtecs on my cx commuter, running shoes on that too. So much better than tethering into work like lilo lil on a pair of disco spods.
I started my MTBing on these back in the day:

I really liked them then & if I was in your situation, I'd give em another go now.
I currently use Time XC8 & Bontrager Rhythm shoes.
