I popped the air-can off my Rockshox Monarch RL, greased it up, added a ml or so of oil, compressed the shock and screwed the can back on - as per a youtube vid I found.

It's all lovely and plush now and seems to work ok but a couple of odd things have happened.

1) There is a slight wheeze on the rebound as it approaches the top. It never used to do that. It could be that the oil in the main chamber is causing me to hear airflow somehow..? If there's some kind of port between -ve and +ve? Or it could be that the lack of friction has now allowed it to return much faster and the damper is having to do more work.

2) I apparently only need 140psi in it rather than 175 before! That's an odd one. As if some -ve chamber is not charged up any more or something..

Any ideas?

Did you compress the shock to fill the negative chamber?

Eg fill to 100 psi, compress shock 10 times, fill to 150 psi, compress, fill to 175, compress.

If you have just inflated to your riding pressure there will be no air in the negative chamber until you compress the shock far enough.

Well, it sorted itself out after a bit of a ride, so that's what I figured was happening!

Re the wheezing - that has lessened now - perhaps my initial theory was correct. Dunno. It seems ok now.

Exactly that. Oil going through the port between the +/- chambers (only open at full extension) will make a noise.

Ah, re read your post.

I put in about a ml or so, wonder if that's going to cause an issue...

Yep oil/ grease through transfer port most likely or it was semi blocked & has cleared.
Have you still got those Marx air forks too btw? 😀
