Am I right in thinking that the lower the shock ratio is on a bike it is more suitable for a heavier rider ?
Pretty sure this was the way back when I had a full sus bike.
Any info greatly appreciated

It means it will need a longer travel shock for the same wheel travel. So, yes, the shock won't be under as much stress and you can run lower pressures or use a softer spring.
