anyone done this? Seems it should be a good solution, can be made secure, big one could double as a workshop. Would take a bit of work to make it look decent enough for a garden though.

Pics?

There's one on a business park near me that has been turned into a bike store so I'm sure it's doable. Bit of overkill for domestic use perhaps?

Depends where you live and how many bikes you have!

I've seen it done, you can store two rows if they are hanging from the ceiling by the front or back wheels and still have room to walk down the middle to get them out. The capacity is massive! They are too narrow to work well as a workshop tho (unless you are a watchmaker), but you can store your tools in their and work out in front of it

We are certainly talking about 'dozens' rather than 'several' bikes lol

When we were looking to buy a house last year, the shipping container was in theory a substitute for in case the house came without a garage.

From what I could make out though, they had the potential to be damp as unventilated (as they came) and also ugly as sin.

We’ve converted 2 successfully into workshops, all lines and vented and heated.

Only weak point are the lock handles, so we got some extra welded braces and recessed inserts for extra locks.

Conversion took about 3-4weeks all in.

Be careful, if not lined they get mighty hot inside in summer..

Good point about overheating but I have a solution. I was thinking side opening so you could fit a workbench and load of tools in there, open it out to work.

Green roof on on the top and wooden or similar cladding would help avoid overheating, and make it look more acceptable

I currently have a 20ft container on my drive acting as a temporary garage whilst mine is rebuilt.

All I can say is...I want one forever!!!

Do it!

Yes, it works. I've got one with bike storage at one end and a workshop at the other end. As stated they do get rather warm in the summer and if you are working in there you will need light even in the summer ideally.

This is mine - which for some reason the picture is sideways - sigh

I was looking at that picture thinking how good the ceiling storage for the bikes and workstand was till I read the bit about it coming out sideways 🙂
