Just fitted a 10speed zee rear mech but running it with my old 9speed shifters, chain and cassette with a wide narrow chainring.
I have done the 6mm aluminium block bodge and have sweet gear shifting in the bike stand.
Now when I took it up and down the street I get all the gears except 1st as when it goes into 1st the mech locks up, any idea whats causing this?
And how to rectify it?

I thought the 9 speed shifters need to be SRAM not Shimano to work properly.

10 speed chain or 9 speed?

What sort of lock up perhaps incorrect b tension?

Is it a full suss bike? Possibly chain tension related? (assuming by 1st you mean the lowest gear) That'll change when you go from the stand (uncompressed) to riding (sagged)

When you say locks up, do you mean it gets stuck- won't shift back out of 1st?

They do need to be SRAM. Would've thought the indexing would've been all over the place if he's using Shimanos?

Should have said the rest of the gearing is sram and its on a Santa cruz Nomad.

If its tension related would adding a couple of links to my chain make it work?

Drop the shock out and see what happens between uncompressed and fully compressed. Not sure what a vpp is like for chain growth but it's significant on my five. Needed a couple more links at full compression.

Added a few links, now works like a dream.
Just hope it doesn't clatter around on the rough stuff.
