They are raved about in all the reviews but I've had two and bent both with innocuous hits within a week of fitting and that's with standard peaks riding. Don't seem as robust as standard XT Shadow, which I had for years. Have I just been unlucky or is that low price = low quality somewhere?

I think you must be unlucky. I have 2 and find them really sturdy.
