Sheeeeet, went for a ride yesterday and the front brake just went pop. Expecting (hoping) it was a leaking banjo I was very surprised to see that it was clearly leaking from the piston!

Just removed it and further inspection reveals that yes it's the piston.

I bought a second hand bike which had these on so I can't simply send them back.

Any recommendations? Do you think Madison / Shimano would be interested? Can I simply replace the faulty piston?

I'm less than happy because I loved these brakes, and weirdly two weeks of hard alpine riding didn't phase but the carpark at Nant Yr Arian broke them! Oh, and they're expensive!

should have bought Hope as your brakes are now dead due to a crappy square rubber seal.

I think XTR has a 3 year warranty, I could be wrong. Just take them to a shop and ask them to send them back under warranty.

May be covered under warranty as M988 havent been out that long, so no need to prove proof of purchase. Ask local LBS who can contact Madison for you. Definitely worth a go as Ive had a 9 month old front mech crack and fail. They coughed up in the end, but did take some pushing.

I had this recently - it's a cracked piston - they're very fragile - especially if you start trying to push them back manually...

As variflex says, proof of purchase and get it back to Shimano and hopefully they'll replace it for you.

Mine was done without question, but that said, it was brand new.

Cheers guys, I'll try my LBS but I won't hold my breath because they came on a second hand bike I bought.
Bugger bugger bugger.

You can get replacement calipers from CRC. Xtr £90 and Xt £50, so not all is lost. Having to replace whole parts seems wrong but if I need to do this to mine, they'd still work out a lot cheaper than Hopes. And stop you better as well !
